Biography:
Professor Haiyan Song has a strong background in Economics. His major research areas include tourism and wine economics. He was educated both in China and the UK, and has extensive research and consultancy experiences in areas such as foreign direct investment (FDI) in China and economic issues related to China's tourism sector. Over the years, Prof. Song has been involved in a number of projects on tourism demand forecasting in the Asia Pacific region. He has also spoken frequently, as invited speaker and presenter of research papers, at various international conferences on issues related to tourism and wine economics.
Prof. Song was honoured by the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education with the John Wiley & Sons Lifetime Research Achievement Award in 2010, and Michael D. Olsen Research Achievement Award from the University of Delaware in 2014. Prof. Song has been appointed as Mr and Mrs Chan Chak Fu Professor in International Tourism since September 2017. Abstract
Demand for Imported Wines in China
This study analyses the demand for imported wines in China. Wine demand is split into bottled, bulk and sparkling wines and the top five source markets for each type of wine are investigated using economic models. The empirical results demonstrate that income is the most important factor that affects China’s imported wines, but price only plays a significant role for certain source markets. Substitute and complement effects are identified between wines from different countries and between imported wines and other alcoholic drinks. The results also show that the growth of China’s demand for imported wines is expected to continue with moderate fluctuations in the future. France occupies the largest market share in the bottled wine import whilst Chile and Spain dominate the bulk and sparkling wine markets.
