Summary

Micro-, nano- and meso-scale surface structures can dramatically alter the surface properties of materials thus are useful for high-value manufacturing. However, there are multiple technological difficulties in fabricating such cross-scale surface structures in terms of both the precision level and the industrial productivity. In this talk, state-of-the-art technologies for cross-scale surface structuring via interdisciplinary processing methodologies will be focused. Some recent R&D examples will be introduced, such as micro/nano multiscale surface grooving by using vibrated or tool-servo driven diamond cutting tools, hybrid surface structuring by pulsed laser irradiation, as well as molding/imprinting of large area functional surfaces. The possible industrial applications of these cross-scale surface structuring technologies include light operation, wettability control, fluid resistance reduction, interfacial bonding, and mold release. The future trends, opportunities and challenges in this area will be outlooked.
