Summary
The accelerated digitalization, coupled with the critical challenges caused by the pandemic, has fundamentally transformed international business landscapes, resulting in a new organizational form of cross-border e-commerce enterprises. Given that human resources (HR) are the primary carriers of knowledge resources for organizations, how cross-border e-commerce enterprises reconfigure HR and corresponding social relationships to a more flexible, agile mode for realizing business model innovation in such circumstances has become an essential yet under-investigated issue. In response, this research aims to delve into how the interactions of intellectual capital-enhancing HR reconfigurations and knowledge base affect business model innovation from an integrative lens of strategic HR management and knowledge-based view. We used quantitative methods to examine our hypotheses based on the data collected from Chinese cross-border e-commerce enterprises. Results show a positive/inversed U- shaped/U-shaped relationship between human/social/organizational capital-enhancing HR reconfigurations and business model innovation, respectively, and the moderating role of the ambidextrous knowledge base. Theoretically, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of how different HR reconfigurations act as knowledge-based competitive advantages for firms to fulfill business model innovation. Practically, the study offers valuable implications for practitioners and policymakers to cope with emerging challenges in operating the unorthodox, ever-changing organizational forms of cross-border e-commerce enterprises in a turbulent time.
