Summary
Smart manufacturing depends on the timely acquisition, distribution, and utilisation of information from machines and processes from manufacturing shop floors and across product lifecycles. Effective information sharing can improve production quality, reliability, resource efficiency and the recyclability of end-of-life products. Smart manufacturing built on digitalisation also aims for better sustainability. As emerging infrastructures, cyber-physical systems and cloud manufacturing provide new opportunities to achieve the goals of smart manufacturing. For the sake of the audience with diverse background, the following topics will be covered in this seminar:
- A brief overview of manufacturing and AI history
- Current status and movements towards smart manufacturing
- Latest advancement and future opportunities of smart manufacturing research
- Showcases of a few examples
While advanced AI methods show great promise in smart manufacturing, challenges towards digitalisation in the areas of future trends remain to be identified and will be highlighted in this seminar.
