ISE PhD student won the outstanding paper award in the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) 2023

Mr. K. T. Chung, a PhD student under the guidance of Dr. Carman Lee and Dr. Paul Tsang, received the Outstanding Paper Award at the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) 2023. In an impressive gathering of scholars and professionals at the conference, which took place in Singapore from December 18 to 21, 2023, Mr. Chung's paper titled "Solving Capacitated and Time-constrained Vehicle Routing Problems by Deep Reinforcement Learning-based Method" was shortlisted (top 4% among all the submissions), and finally received the outstanding paper award for its innovative approach and significant contribution to the field of industrial engineering. The paper, which addresses complex logistical challenges through advanced deep reinforcement learning techniques, showcases the cutting-edge research being conducted by ISE researchers and highlights our commitment to fostering an environment where academic excellence and research innovation can thrive. We extend our heartiest congratulations to Mr. K. T. Chung on his well-deserved achievement and wish him further success in his academic pursuits and professional endeavors.

ISE PhD student is honored with the Best Student Paper Award at the 2023 International Conference on Electric Vehicle and Vehicle Engineering (CEVVE)

Mr. HU Dong from the Human-Oriented Intelligent Systems Lab (HOIS) was honored with the Best Student Paper Award at the 2023 International Conference on Electric Vehicle and Vehicle Engineering (CEVVE) held in Shenzhen, China, November 10-12, 2023. The objective of CEVVE is to provide a platform and opportunities for researchers, scientists, scholars and engineers to exchange their research experiences and share new ideas to promote their research progress in the field of Electric Vehicles and Vehicle Engineering through discussion on practical issues, challenges encountered as well as solutions adopted. The article 'Enhancing Autonomous Driving Following Motion Decision Making Through Model Based Policy Optimization' won the award and was written by Mr. HU Dong as the first author with Dr. HUANG Chao as the corresponding author. This article proposes an autonomous driving following strategy called Adaptive Rollout Model-based Policy Optimization, which greatly improves the safety, comfort, and economy of vehicles. Mr. HU Dong attended the award ceremony and presented the paper at the conference. Mr. HU Dong is currently a Ph.D. student in the ISE Department. He is supervised by Dr. HUANG Chao and is co-supervised by Dr. Lee Carman K.M. Congratulations to the team, and we wish them further success along the future research road.

ISE PhD student achievement in the 2023 IEEE ITSS Student Competition in Pedestrian Behavior Prediction

Mr. HU Fengqing, Mr. WANG Mingfeng, Dr. WU Jingda, and Dr. HUANG Chao from the Human-Oriented Intelligent Systems Lab (HOIS) achieved rank 2 and received 2nd prize in the 2023 IEEE ITSS Student Competition in Pedestrian Behavior Prediction. The 2023 IEEE ITSS Student Competition in Pedestrian Behavior Prediction was organized by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (IEEE ITSS), Technical Committee on Human-Centered AI in Transportation (HAIT). This competition aimed at advancing the research field of pedestrian behavior prediction, which is one of the most critical challenges for fully automated driving in urban settings. Research teams in the field of intelligent transportation from worldwide renowned universities were involved. The ISE team won the second prize with the project entitled “An Ensemble Multimodal-LSTM with Data Augmentation for Pedestrian Intention Prediction”, which was led by Mr. HU Fengqing and was supervised by Dr. HUANG Chao. The project aimed at producing more accurate and robust pedestrian behavior prediction methods based on deep neural networks to ensure the safety of both pedestrians and autonomous vehicles. Mr. HU Fengqing attended the award ceremony and presented the project at the 3rd Workshop on The Prediction of Pedestrian Behaviors for Automated Driving at ITSC 2023. Mr. HU Fengqing is currently a Ph.D. student from the Department of ISE. He is supervised by Dr. HUANG Chao and is co-supervised by Prof. FU Xiaowen. Mr. WANG Mingfeng is currently a MSc student from the Department of Applied Mathematics (AMA). He is working on his thesis with the Department of ISE on the topic of pedestrian intention. Dr. WU Jingda is currently a Postdoc researcher in the Department of ISE. He received his Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University (NTU). His research interest lies in the intersection between reinforcement learning (RL) and autonomous electrified vehicles. ISE PhD student won the Champion Award at the HKIE Control, Automation & Instrumentation Division “CA Paper Award Competition (Postgraduate level) 2022/23

ISE PhD students Tong ZHU and her supervisors Prof Suet TO and Dr Carman LEE won the Champion Award in the “CA Paper Award Competition (Postgraduate level) 2022/2023” organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) – Control, Automation and Instrumentation Division (CAD) and co-organized by the Institute of Measurement and Control, Hong Kong Section. The award winning paper is titled as “Accurate Machining Cycle Time Prediction of UPM Using Data-driven Model”, supervised by Dr. Carman Lee and Prof Sandy To. The CA Paper Award Competition aims to promote Control, Automation & Instrumentation technologies and inspire young engineers and technologists to showcase their innovative ideas. Efficient cycle time prediction helps in the optimal utilization of resources such as labor, equipment, and materials, particularly in the Ultra- precision machining (UPM). The award winning paper aims to develop a data-driven model for achieving high accuracy in cycle time predictions, which is vital for improving efficiency, resource management, and cost-effectiveness in UPM. It offers a practical solution that can be implemented in real-world UPM environments, and contributes to the efficiency and competitiveness of the industry.

ISE graduates won the Champion Award at the HKIE Control, Automation & Instrumentation Division “CA Paper Award Competition (Undergraduate level) 2022/23

ISE graduates Sze Tung CHEUNG, Ho Hin CHEUNG, Mei Yan AU and Tsz Ting Angela YOUNG won the Champion award in the “CA Paper Award Competition (Undergraduate level) 2022/2023” organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) – Control, Automation and Instrumentation Division (CAD) and co-organized by the Institute of Measurement and Control, Hong Kong Section. The awarded winning paper, titled “Collision avoidance and trajectory tracking for multiple autonomous mobile robots in the robot operating system”, was supervised by Dr. Carman Lee. The CA Paper Award Competition aims to promote Control, Automation & Instrumentation technologies and inspire young engineers and technologists to showcase their innovative ideas. With the increasing deployment of autonomous mobile robots in various industries, ensuring the safety and efficient operation of these autonomous mobile robots becomes crucial. The award winning paper focuses on collision avoidance and trajectory tracking to minimize accidents, damage, and disruptions in environments where these robots operate, such as warehouses, factories, hospitals, and other public spaces.

1st Place Winner in the 6th European International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management(IEOM)

Competition Type: Undergraduate Research Competition Organization: IEOM Society   Paper Title: Study of how the experience and behavior of consumers are affected by user experience (UX) design in the online fashion retailing industry Winners: Mau Wong Yeh, Mei Yan Au, Tsz Ting Angela Young & Ka Man Lee Abstract This research intends to analyze the relationship between the perception attributes of user experience design influence their perceived value and customer loyalty. In accordance with the hypotheses model that being developed with the foundation of technology acceptance model and other research models in investigating customer fulfilment, customers were required to complete a simulation of online fashion shopping along with evaluation of their shopping experience for the distinguishment for the crucial perception of user experience attributes that result to customer loyalty as well as the examination of the relationships among constructs. Au; CKM Lee Abstract With the ubiquity of Augmented Reality (AR) technology, the behavior of mobile social media users is changed, and more users tend to use it daily. The trend of using AR filters is emerging, and the value of the AR market has kept increasing in recent years. Along with the growth of social commerce, marketing managers have started investing in AR technology like AR Filter to achieve the company's marketing goals and objectives. Hence, this research study the factors affecting the behavioral intention of AR Filter users in the Hong Kong catering industry to provide implications for marketing managers and AR Filter developers. A hypothesis model is formulated to investigate the relationship between the perceived value of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Satisfaction-Loyalty Model and the effect on the behavioral intention of AR Filter users. The determinants of the perceived value of TAM are also studied to find out the factors affecting AR Filter users' behavioral intention to provide implications for the developers to create a better AR experience for the users. Questionnaire research is conducted, and the Structural Equation Model (SEM) approach is adopted to investigate the relationship between the constructs.  

Opening Ceremony of IET-PolyU Mentorship Programme 2023/24

DATE: November 2, 2023 VENUE: FJ404 ORGANIZER(S): Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University CO-ORGANIZER(S): Institution of Engineering and Technology   The Institute of Engineering and Technology and Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering of PolyU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to help ISE students in Industrial and Systems Engineering gain valuable experience and insights from experienced mentors. This year, we have almost 25 mentees participating in the IET-PolyU Mentorship Programme, with 9 mentors who all have more than 10 years of industry experience in various fields. During the mentorship kick-off ceremony, Mr. Cola Lam, an alumni of BEng (Hons) of Product Engineering with Marketing and secretary of the IET Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering Section (MIES), provided an inspiring talk for mentees and shared his professional experience in career path development. Mentors interacted with the students and offered valuable advice during the networking session.

香港理工大學與萊茵科斯特簽約共建智能製造聯合實驗室 PolyU and Rhein-Köster Setup a Joint Laboratory in Smart Manufacturing

On October 30, 2023, at the signing site of the second Shandong-Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Fair, the "Hong Kong Polytechnic University - Rhein-Köster Joint Laboratory of Smart Manufacturing" MOU was officially signed (10 million Hong Kong dollars over 5 years). Dr ZHENG Pai, Assistant Professor of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Mr. CUI Zhi, Chairman of Rhein-Köster attended the signing ceremony. This is the first joint laboratory to be established in the field of smart manufacturing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. It will give full play to the professional characteristics of both parties, focus on the R&D in the fields of digitalized smart production line and human-robot collaborative manufacturing systems, and jointly develop a talent nurturing teaching scheme for future industries. Rhein-Köster, an industrial pioneer in the research and development, promotion and implementation of applied talent development, has taken the lead in boosting the innovation of industry-empowered education. The company is working closely with the Zibo high-tech zone in Shandong province to explore the integrated model of "government-enterprise-school-market". Currently, Rhein-Koester's model has been widely used in more than 10 industry-education integration training bases throughout the country. Rhein-Koester aims to develop new innovative training and industrial systems to achieve sustainable hydrogen production and related energy management, contributing to combating climate change by cultivating talents and professionals in cooperation with various universities in Germany. Mentoring the Next Generation: PolyU Scholars Guide High School Students in Developing a Metaverse Virtual Environment in the Junior Research Mentorship Program

This year, PolyU hosted the third "Junior Research Mentorship Program", in which approximately 80 scholars from various disciplines within PolyU guided over 130 high school students through four-month research projects. Two Form 6 students, Sarah Zeng from C&MA Sun Kei Secondary School and Vanessa Chan from Diocesan Girls' School, conducted a study titled "Development of a Metaverse Virtual Environment". This study was carried out under the guidance of Dr YM Tang and Mr Hadyn Ng from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. In the project, participating students were tasked with creating a virtual environment within the metaverse, complete with avatars or virtual characters to facilitate user interaction in this digital realm. Unlike applications that are primarily designed for entertainment, the main objective of this project was to incorporate game elements into applications that promote healthy physical activity. The students successfully demonstrated game design sensibilities and proficiency in 3D modeling, both of which were crucial to the creation of the metaverse project. By the end of the project, an interactive back-to-school game had been developed within the metaverse environment. This allowed the students to gain first-hand experience interacting with a diverse user base within this virtual space. Additionally, the students conducted research and analysis to evaluate the project's outcomes and determine their feasibility.
