Brief Biosketch

Prof. You is currently a professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and serves as Associate Director of PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute. She was with Department of Computing of PolyU from Nov. 1998 till Sep. 2024. Prof. You obtained her BEng. in Electronic Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1986 and Ph.D in Computer Science from La Trobe University, Australia in 1992. She was a lecturer at the University of South Australia and senior lecturer (tenured) at Griffith University from 1993 till 2002. Prof. You was awarded French Foreign Ministry International Postdoctoral Fellowship in 1993 and worked on the project on real-time object recognition and tracking at Universite Paris XI. She also obtained the Academic Certificate issued by French Education Ministry in 1994.

Professor You has been engaged in the application research of AI to different areas for many years. She has participated in and been responsible for many large-scale scientific and technological innovation projects funded by the Hong Kong government such as GRF (General Research Fund) and ITF (Innovation Technology Fund). So far Prof. You has published more than 300 papers in internationally renowned journals and conferences, applied for and obtained several invention patents, including 3 US patents, and has won many awards such as the International Invention Award, the Best Academic Paper Award, the Hong Kong Industry Award, and PolyU Outstanding Contribution Award.

Professor You's R&D achievements in AI driven applications to medical diagnosis and monitoring include the second place in the 2009 Online Retinopathy Detection Challenge (ROC'2009) organized by the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), Special Prize and Gold Medal with Jury’s Commendation at the 39th International Invention Exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland in 2011, the second place in the 2015 Hong Kong Innovation Competition, and the silver medal and special award at the 44th International Invention Exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland in 2016.

Professor You is also the associate editor of several international academic journals, including the internationally renowned journals IEEE Trans. Neural Networks and Learning Systems (IEEE-TNNLS) and Pattern Recognition. She also reviews manuscripts for many well-known journals and actively participates in the organization of many international academic conference series.
