Brief Biosketch

Professor Jianguo Lin graduated with a BEng in Agriculture Machinery from Xinjiang Shihezi University in Feb. 1982, an MEng in Engineering Graphics from Taiyuan University of Technology in Jan. 1985, China, and, a PhD in The manufacturing of leather shoes from University of Sheffield (UK) in 1991. He then worked, as a post-doctoral researcher, on high-temperature creep and fatigue for 5 years. In 1996, he joined the University of Birmingham as a lecturer in the Geometric Modelling Group. In 2002, he moved to the Metal Forming Group at Birmingham and then commenced his independent research on metal forming. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2004 and Reader in 2006 at Birmingham. In 2008, Lin took up a Full Chair at Imperial College London, as the Head of Mechanics of Materials Division and a member of departmental management committee (04.2008-10.2018); during which, he additionally held a Royal Academy of Engineering and Tata Steel Research Chair (2015-2020). He was elected as a Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) in 2013 and European Academy of Science in 2017.

At Imperial College London, he established the Metal Forming and Materials Modelling research group, which had >50 researchers (PhDs, PDRAs and Academic staff) in 2022 working on a variety of metal forming technologies with an international reputation for creating fundamental theories, experimental methods and innovative technologies for forming lightweight added-value engineering components, and, providing innovative solutions for aerospace, automotive, rail, shipbuilding and metal-forming related industries. Professor Lin has been the principal investigator (PI) and secured >50 research grants, from £12k to £10 million per grant, worth a total of >£30 million and involved in projects worth over £110 million, from the UK government (EPSRC & Innovation-UK), European Commission (FP6, FP7 & H2020), UK and overseas industries. He has coordinated several large research projects (up to 21 partners over 9 countries). These projects have enabled him to establish a strong multidisciplinary team for creating novel fundamental theories and innovative forming technologies. The Group has received two Imperial President’s Medals for “Excellence in Research 2022 – Outstanding Research Team” and for “Excellence in External Engagement and Partnerships - 2016”. Lin was a founder director of 4 research centres and 2 joint research Labs fully funded by industry. He is also a founder director of 3 Imperial spin-off companies to commercialise the forming technologies he created, include HFQ®, Flextrude®, Wiextrude® and Sheetrude®.

Professor Lin is an author or/and co-author for >400 research papers, 2 books and >20 patents. He is a joint Editor-in-Chief of Int. J. of Lightweight Materials and Manufacture (2018-), Editor (2016-2022) & Honorary Editor (2022-) of Cogent Engineering, and an editorial board member for 6 international journals.

In September 2024, Professor Lin joined the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), as a Chair Professor, to continue his research in materials processing and modelling technologies.
