9-10 December 2024 - Visit of the Shanghai Gongli Hospital delegates
Coordinated by the JRC-PHC team, the Shanghai delegates toured the Wan Chai District Health Centre and the Harmony Garden Lutheran Centre for the Elderly. This hands-on experience provided the Shanghai delegates with valuable insights into the current practices of primary health services in Hong Kong, paving the way for future research and collaborative initiatives.
26 November 2024 - Visit to Lutheran Service Centre
On 26 November 2024, the JRC-PHC team visited the Sai Cho Wan Lutheran Centre for the Elderly and engaged in a meeting with the Lutheran social service team. The primary focus of the meeting was to explore the feasibility of establishing a standardized health-social documentation system at the elderly centre to create a comprehensive database for research purposes.
During the meeting, the JRC-PHC team introduced various non-pharmaceutical interventions and strategies aimed at monitoring outcomes within the care pathway. The discussion emphasized the importance of moving beyond generic assessments to include specific conditions that align with the specialties of the JRC-PHC team members. Key areas of focus included osteopenia and osteoporosis, menopause related to women’s health, migraine and neuro-cardiac health, as well as chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
22 October 2024 - Signing Ceremony for the MOU on Collaboration between PolyU and AIA Life Insurance
On 22 October 2024, a signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between AIA Life Insurance (hereinafter referred to as "AIA") and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (hereinafter referred to as "PolyU") took place successfully at PolyU. This significant event marks the official beginning of a deep collaboration between the two parts in the field of elderly care.
Looking ahead, AIA and PolyU will work together to explore advanced care models in home care services based on the Omaha System, and create a comprehensive ecosystem for the elderly health industry. This partnership aims to ultimately serve millions of elderly individuals and their families across China.
The signing ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Prof. Janelle YORKE, Chair Professor and Head of the School of Nursing at PolyU; Prof. Frances WONG, Director of JRC-PHC, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, and Chair Professor of Advanced Nursing Practice; Mr ZHANG Min, Chief Customer Officer of AIA; Ms CHU Feiqing, Head of the Health Management Department at AIA; Ms KONG Qingkun, Head of the Health and Wellness Service Development and Management Team at AIA; and Mr LEI Wenhan from AIA's Health Management Department. During the ceremony, Mr ZHANG Min and Prof. YORKE officially signed the Memorandum of Understanding, marking a new chapter in their collaborative efforts.
19 September 2024 - JRC-PHC team visit to Labour and Welfare Bureau
On September 19, 2024, Prof. Frances WONG and her team, along with representatives from the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, visited the Hong Kong Labour and Welfare Bureau. The visit focused on in-depth discussions regarding the theme of health-social partnerships in community-based care. Prof. WONG introduced the World Health Organization's new guidelines on population health management and shared the achievements made in collaboration with the Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service in the area of health-social partnerships. She also proposed the establishment of an integrated health-social partnership information system. The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Chris Sun, expressed high recognition of the achievements and the proposed information system, and conveyed his agreement to explore collaboration opportunities and mechanisms in the future.

Prof. Frances WONG, Dr Robbie WANG and Dr Shao-ling WANG were invited by the Shenzhen Hospital of Southern Medical University to attend an expert consultation meeting on specialist nursing talent education, a key municipal project in Shenzhen on 24 April 2024. The meeting discussed two topics: Nurses Practitioner training program and certification, and the International Advanced Practical Nursing School establishment plan. Also attending the meeting were Prof. Wenzhi CAI (Vice President), Prof. Wei REN (Director of the Nursing Teaching and Research Office) of the Shenzhen Hospital of Southern Medical University, Lili ZHANG (Dean), Prof. Yajie LI and Prof. Xueqin LIU of the School of Nursing of Southern Medical University, and Prof. Iris MEYENBURG ALTWARG, Dean of Nursing and Vice Dean of Hospital, Hanover Medical School, Germany, Prof. Miriam BUTLER, Director of the Sinclair School of Nursing, University of Missouri, USA, and Dr Lihua YU, Assistant Professor of the Barnes Jewish College, USA.

The Joint Research Centre for Primary Health Care (JRC-PHC) has been established in November 2023 and officially launched on 15 January 2024 with an aim to integrate multidisciplinary efforts for promoting health and prevent illness through designing and implementing novel interventions and innovative service models, optimising the use of health technology, and engaging stakeholders in these processes. The JRC-PHC collaborates with top universities to produce the best evidence for primary health care, and partners with local and regional service providers for knowledge transfer and capacity building to support sustainable primary healthcare services with societal impacts. Four main research areas of the Centre are: Continuity and Continuum of Care, Health Information Technology, Implementation Science and Policy and Stakeholder Engagement. The collaborative universities include Sun Yat-sen University, Fudan University and Tianjin Medical University.

Prof. Janelle YORKE, Head of the School of Nursing & Chair Professor of Nursing also attended the meeting.

Prof. Arkers WONG was invited as a keynote speaker and forum speaker for the 21st anniversary celebration ceremony of the Salvation Army Carer Association, held on 6 January 2024. Prof. WONG has been collaborating with the Association to conduct a research study titled ‘Effectiveness of a Telecare-Based Intervention Programme in Supporting Informal Caregivers of Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Reducing Stress Levels’.

On 20 December 2023, The School and Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service announced the results of a research study conducted by Prof. Arkers WONG, Assistant Professor, which examined the effect of a programme integrating the use of gernotechnology and rehabilitation therapy, as well as combining with the support and guidance from young instructors, on physical and psychological wellness among the older adults with mild cognitive impairment recruited from the community elderly centres. Significant improvements were found in the body mass index, cognition ability, level of depression and e-health literacy of the older adults who participated in the programme.

Prof. Frances WONG (3rd from left in the photo)'s project on Standardising Nursing Terminology in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area for Developing a Clinical Nursing Decision Support System and Webpage Integrating Service, Research and Industry' was among the sixty projects showcased in the 3rd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Health Cooperation Conference hosted by the Governments of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau on 10-11 November 2023.

In early November, Prof. Frances WONG gave another lecture titled 'Demonstrating the Competence of Advanced Practice Nurses in the Contribution of the Sustainability of the Healthcare Systems' to over 500 audiences at the Nursing Continuing Education Course, oraganised by the Department of Nursing of Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, a hospital affiliated with the Zhejiang University School of Medicine, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Mainland China.
