JAPJAP Zero Waste Limited
JAPJAP is an innovative self-service recycling system which represents a community-based sustainable (‘Cradle-to-Cradle’) solution to domestic food waste in Hong Kong. The product uses bio-technology (black soldier flies) which live in a modular stacking system using upcycled pallets. Food waste is significantly reduced through this environmentally-friendly method as the black soldier flies are able to eat many kinds of food waste, reducing the need for harmful landfill sites. Focussed on sustainable living, the JAPJAP concept carries with it an educative role. Partnering with a STEAM-based (i.e. science and technology) learning institution, JAPJAP also engages in public outreach, encouraging younger users to adopt sustainable living practices at an early stage to carry with them into adulthood. Furthermore, a school-based setting provides JAPJAP with a unique testing ground in which users can help to improve and innovate recycling technologies.
