Global Positioning System (GPS) / Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is one of the most prevailing satellite technologies that have improved our daily life. Now a standard function in every smartphone, it helps us navigate in walking, driving, hiking, to name a few. Because of its high measurement precision, it has widely been used as an essential tool in land surveying and many other industries.
The International Association of Chinese Professionals in Global Positioning Systems (CPGPS), is a non-profit organization headquartered in the University of Calgary, Canada. It provides a global platform for Chinese professionals in the GPS/GNSS field to have academic exchanges. Many of the CPGPS members have made significant contributions to the development of the Chinese Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), one of the four global GNSS systems together with U.S. GPS, Russian GLONASS, and European Galileo.
Dr. Liu is an internationally well recognized expert in the GPS/GNSS field. His Lab “Micro-Laboratory of Atmospheric Research and Geomatics Engineering (Micro-LARGE)” has developed many novel algorithms and methods that are widely used by the community. For instance, his novel algorithm for cycle slip detection and repairing, a key procedure necessary in nearly all the high precision GNSS applications, has been widely adopted by both academic and industrial sectors. In addition to the service for JGPS, Dr. Liu currently also serves in the editorial board of two other top GPS/GNSS journals, “GPS Solutions” and “Satellite Navigation”. He is the only scientist from Hong Kong and one of the only two worldwide simultaneously serving in these three journals.
