MSc in Multimedia & Entertainment Technology Internship

Job Summary

MSc in Multimedia & Entertainment Technology (MScMET) of School of Design is a taught postgraduate programme working closely with PolyU Research Centre for Cultural and Art Technology and PolyU-NVIDIA Joint Research Centre. As an eligible employer under STEM Internship Scheme set up by the Innovation and Technology Commission (“ITC”), HKSAR government, MScMET is seeking highly skilled undergraduate & postgraduate students in the area of creative technologies, cultural heritage, artificial intelligence generated content, metaverse, digital content to join our team during summer of 2024. We are looking for fives interns positions under two tracks. 

 

Track 1: Animator, Visual Artist and Illustrators

 

Project 1: Visual Artist/Animator Intern

Project Description:

This internship offers the opportunity to engage in the creation of narrative illustrations and animations that capture and convey imaginative stories through visual art. Ideal for candidates passionate about storytelling, artistic expression, and animation.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Design and produce compelling illustrations and animations that vividly tell stories or depict concepts.
  • Collaborate with creative teams to ensure visual narratives align with overarching project themes.
  • Utilize digital tools and software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects for art creation and animation.
  • Participate in brainstorming and creative sessions to generate innovative ideas and refine visual concepts.
  • Receive and implement feedback to refine visuals and meet creative standards.

Required Skills:

  • Artistic capabilities, with the ability to produce engaging visual narratives.
  • Proficiency in key digital illustration and animation tools.
  • Strong creative and conceptual skills with a keen eye for detail in visual storytelling.

Track 2: XR Engineer, Software Engineer 

 

Project 2 - IOS/React Native Developer: Spatial Note Taking App

Project Description:

The intern will contribute to the development of an Augmented Reality (AR) application designed to annotate, provide feedback, and offer commentary on both real-world and virtual objects. This experience will be developed for iOS devices.

 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the program team to help prototype, design and implement features for a persistent AR experience on iOS utilizing partner APIs available for our project use case.

  • Assist in the development of the application using either Swift for native iOS applications or React Native for cross-platform functionality.

  • Engage in testing and debugging to ensure a smooth, user-friendly experience.

  • Participate in regular team meetings to discuss progress and address challenges.

Required Skills:

  • Solid understanding of iOS development environments and general software engineering skills. 

  • Familiarity with Swift or React Native is preferable.

  • Familiarity and experience with ARKit or ARCore

  • Interest in AR technologies and their application.

Project 3 - VR Developer: Augmenting Environments in VR

Project Description:

As an intern, you will be actively involved in the development of a Virtual Reality (VR) application for the Meta Quest platform, designed to allow users to customize virtual environments according to their preferences.

 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing immersive VR features specifically Meta Quest headset in Unity

  • Collaborate with the team on the design, implementation, and refinement of augmenting VR spaces.

  • Conduct tests on the Meta Quest to ensure functionality, performance, and user satisfaction.

  • Attend and contribute to project meetings, providing updates and receiving feedback on development progress.

Required Skills:

  • Experience with Unity is required

  • Basic understanding of VR development, particularly for the Meta Quest platform or other VR development tools is highly beneficial.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for VR technology.

  • Effective communication and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Project 4 - VR Developer: AIGC Aided VR Image Creator/Editor

 

Project Description:

In this role, you will contribute to an innovative project that involves converting existing Unity-based applications into fully immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experiences. The focus will be on rendering virtual elements as realistic, interactive objects within a VR environment, enhanced by AI-generated content.


Core Responsibilities:

  • Assist in porting Unity projects to VR platforms, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience.

  • Work with AI tools to enhance the realism and interactivity of virtual objects.

  • Collaborate with the development team to optimize VR content for performance and user engagement.

  • Test VR experiences on various devices to ensure quality and functionality.

  • Participate in project meetings to discuss progress and integrate feedback.

Required Skills:

  • Experience with Unity is required

  • Interest in AI technologies and their application in VR.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a passion for VR technology i.e good UX experience for VR, avoiding nausea. 

  • Effective communication and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Project 5: Designing Agents for Conversational Discussion

 

Project Description:

The intern will be involved in developing and refining conversational agents using OpenAI’s technology and other leading large language models. This role is centered on creating intelligent, goal-oriented dialogue systems that can engage users in meaningful interactions.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Develop conversational agents using OpenAI and other LLM platforms.

  • Implement and test various agent strategies to achieve specific overall goals.

  • Collaborate with the team to integrate natural language processing (NLP) capabilities into the agents and interfacing with different tools for function calling 

  • Analyze and utilize user feedback to improve agent responses and interaction quality.

  • Attend development meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and strategies.

Required Skills:

  • Strong programming skills, particularly in Python, and ability to quickly prototyping.

  • Ability to work with APIs and integrate diverse software components.

  • Creative problem-solving skills and a keen interest in AI and machine learning.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.

 

Project 6: Artificial Intelligence Design Intern

 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on LLM-based multi-agent systems and their applications in enhancing teamwork and creativity in the design process.

  • Develop and test prototypes of multi-agent systems, including front-end development and interface design, to evaluate their effectiveness in collaborative design tasks.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate LLM-based solutions into existing design workflows.

  • Utilize Python for data analysis, system development, and automation tasks related to the project.

 

Eligibility

As required by ITC, the STEM Internship Scheme is open to undergraduates and postgraduates who are:

  • local or non-local students enrolling on one of the full-time STEM programmes (please refer to the List of Eligible STEM Programmes” on this page) recognised by ITC to be eligible for the Scheme;

  • from any year of studies; and

  • legally employable in Hong Kong.

Interested candidate should note that this internship CANNOT be used to fulfil WIE requirements. Successful applicants are required to attend a mandatory pre-internship training workshop organised by CPS, SAO. For more details, please refer to Notes for Students.

 

Job Offer

The internship will be offered for two months within the period from June to 31 August. Successful candidate will receive allowance for HK$11,190 per month (i.e. 30days).
