Dr Tommy Minchen WEI obtained The President’s Awards for Outstanding Achievement 2022 of PolyU

Further to the invitation of nominations for the Awards in February 2022, rigorous assessments have been conducted by the Assessment Panels at Faculty/School level, Sub-panels of the respective award categories, and Core Panel co-chaired by the President and DP. Prof. Changyuan Yu and his research team won the Tingye Li Best Paper Award

Prof. Changyuan Yu and his research team won the Tingye Li Best Paper Award in Asia Communications and Photonics Conference and Exhibition (ACP) 2022, Shenzhen, China, November 4-8, 2022. It is the most prestigious international conference held in Asia-Pacific with over 1000 attendants.   For the paper: “Simultaneous Measurement of Axial Strain and Temperature Based on Twin-core Single-hole Fiber with Vernier effect” (authored by Y. Li, Y. Liu, W. Yuan, and C. Yu)

Prof. LI Gang and Prof. YAN Feng recognised amongst the world’s most highly cited researchers

Two Photonics Research Institute (PRI) scholars, Prof. LI Gang and Prof. YAN Feng have been recognised in the list of “Highly Cited Researchers 2022” by Clarivate Analytics for their significant research impact, reflected in their publication of multiple papers that have been frequently cited by fellow academics.   A total of 6,938 researchers from 69 countries and regions with a diverse range of research fields are named as Highly Cited Researchers in 2022. The list identifies the most influential scholars around the world, determined by the production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in the Web of Science citation index over the last decade.

Prof. Changyuan Yu Elected 2023 Optica Fellow

Prof. Changyuan Yu, one of the Management Committee Member in Photonics Research Institute (PRI), has been elected a Fellow of Optica for 2023 for his significant contributions to signal processing in optical fiber communication and sensing systems, and actively serving the optics community.   The Board of Directors of Optica (formerly OSA), Advancing Optics and Photonics Worldwide, recently elected 109 members from 24 countries to the Society’s 2023 Fellow Class. Optica Fellows are selected based on several factors, including outstanding contributions to business, education, research, engineering, and service to Optica and our community.“I am pleased to welcome the new Optica Fellows,” said Satoshi Kawata 2022 Optica President. “These members join a distinguished group of leaders who are helping to advance the field optics and photonics. Congratulations to the 2023 Class.” Fellows are Optica members who have served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics. IEEE TENCON 2022 (IEEE Region 10 flagship conference) was successfully held on 1-4 November 2022

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world's largest technical professional organization. As Technical Programme co-chair, Prof. Changyuan YU co-organized IEEE TENCON 2022 (IEEE Region 10 flagship conference) and it was successfully held on 1-4 November 2022 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, including one-day invited advanced photonics workshop on 3 November 2022.   IEEE Region 10 Conference (TENCON) is the annual flagship technical event of IEEE Region 10. PRI Members' Research Achievement - Ultraminiature optical fiber-tip directly-printed plasmonic biosensors for label-free biodetection

Congratulations to PRI core members, Prof. Zhang Aping and Prof. Tam Hwa Yaw, their paper was published in Biosensors and Bioelectronics (impact factor: 10.61).   Research Topic: Ultraminiature optical fiber-tip directly-printed plasmonic biosensors for label-free biodetection   Abstracts:   Miniaturization of biosensors has become an imperative demand because of its great potential in in vivo biomarker detection and disease diagnostics as well as the point-of-care testing for coping with public health crisis, such as the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Here, we present an ultraminiature optical fiber-tip biosensor based on the plasmonic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) directly printed upon the end face of a standard multimode optical fiber at visible light range. An in-situ precision photoreduction technology is developed to additively print the micropatterns of size-controlled AuNPs. The AuNPs reveal distinct localized surface plasmon resonance, whose peak wavelength provides an ideal spectral signal for label-free biodetection. The fabricated optical fiber-tip plasmonic biosensor can not only detect antibody, but also test SARS-CoV-2 mimetic DNA sequence at the concentration level of 0.8 pM. Such an ultraminiature fiber-tip plasmonic biosensor offers a cost-effective biodetection technology for a myriad of applications ranging from point-of-care testing to in vivo diagnosis of stubborn diseases.   Please click Here for details.  

Prof. Feng YAN becomes supervisor under the Hong Kong Scholars Program 2022

Since 2011, the Hong Kong Scholars Association has cooperated with the Office of the National Postdoctoral Management Committee of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of the People's Republic of China to organize the "Hong Kong Scholars Program".   This year, A PRI scholar, Prof. Feng YAN, will act as supervisor of the program to recruit inland postdoctoral fellows to carry out scientific research work in Hong Kong, the most amongst the seven publicly-funded universities joining the Program.    Supervisor  Research Project  Prof. Feng YAN  High-performance optoelectronic devices based on novel perovskite materials  

Dr Mingjie LI and his interdisciplinary team recently developed high-quality halide perovskite nanocrystals with enhanced Multiple Exciton generation (MEG)

Multiple exciton generation (MEG) is a process in which the energy of an absorbed photon can be used to create two or more electron-hole pairs in the semiconductor. It also plays an essential role in developing new solar cells and high-performance optoelectronic devices. One of the major energy losses in photon-energy conversion is that if the photon has more energy than is needed to create the electron-hole pair, the excess energy is lost as heat. How to utilize the excess energy to improve photo-conversion efficiency and achieve MEG is necessary and challenging.   Dr Li MingJie of the Department of Applied Physics, one of the member of Photonics Research Institute (PRI), has led an interdisciplinary team recently developed high-quality halide perovskite nanocrystals with enhanced MEG. Nanocrystals (also known as quantum dots) developed by rational design can convert a high-energy photon into multiple electron-hole pairs, breaking the power conversion efficiency limit. The team successfully demonstrated that the internal quantum efficiency exceeded 100% at a low threshold by using such perovskite nanocrystals for the first time. The findings have been published in the highly influential journal Nature Photonics. Dr Li’s research has deepened the MEG mechanism’s understanding and provided valuable solutions for developing highly efficient light-harvesting techniques, including photovoltaics, photon detection, and solar-fuel production.   Please click here for more details. 

Prof. Jianhua Hao secures a Key Program Funding from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)

The Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the application results of the 2022 Exercise in September 2022. Prof. Jianhua Hao’s project is successfully funded by the Key Program of NSFC. As PC/PI, Prof. Hao will collaborate the researchers in Nankai University and Sichuan Normal University, China to perform the study of multifunctional ultrathin ferroelectric integrated materials and devices towards neuromorphic computing and human visual system. Artificial intelligence is the frontier field with significant societal impact. However, the present technologies cannot sufficiently meet the needs of supporting the future information society in terms of information transmission bandwidth, power consumption, processing speed and intelligent control. Particularly, the rapid development of neuromorphic computing and artificial vision system urgently call for the innovation in multifunctional integrated materials and devices. On a basis of the Prof. Hao's internationally recognized works regarding ferroelectric manipulation of rare-earth-doped luminescence and ferroelectric optoelectronics, the proposed study is to effectively integrate ferroelectric polarization with multifunctional characteristics of electronic properties of semiconductor, photodetection and rare-earth ion luminescence. Novel synaptic devices with multi-modes will be demonstrated.
