PolyU Established the Grid Modernization Research Center to Promote Emerging Power Systems Technology Innovation
Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) officially launched the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation at a ceremony held on campus, attracting leaders from 35 government departments, public institutions, research centres, professional bodies, industry associations, and large enterprises across Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China. These leaders represented sectors such as power and energy, energy management, microelectronics, telecommunications, electrical engineering, and rail transport. Additionally, academic leaders and experts from 26 universities across Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China participated in the event.
The ceremony was officiated by Mr. Tse Chin Wan, Secretary for Environment and Ecology of the Hong Kong SAR Government; Dr. Hao Yingjie, Secretary-General of the China Electricity Council; Mr. Qian Zhaoyang, General Manager of China Southern Power Grid Company; Prof. Teng Jinguang, President of PolyU; Prof. Zhao Ruheng, PolyU’s Vice President for Research and Innovation and Director of the Centre for Research and Innovation in Science and Policy; Ir Alfred Sit Wing-hang, Honorary Director of the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation and former Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the Hong Kong SAR Government; and Prof. Chung Chi Yung, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at PolyU and Director of the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation. Together, they witnessed the establishment of the Research Centre.
The launch of the Research Centre for Grid Modernisation at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) attracted widespread media attention, with over 50 media outlets reporting on the event. Major news platforms from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and overseas, including People’s Daily, CCTV, South China Morning Post, The Standard, and China News Service, covered the launch. These media outlets emphasized the significance of the centre in promoting innovation and modernization in grid technology.
With the strong backing of various stakeholders, the PolyU Research Centre for Grid Modernisation is set to play a pivotal role in addressing the challenges faced by the energy and power sectors, while its establishment was celebrated as a significant step toward fostering cross-border cooperation in clean energy technologies.
