Research Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (RCNN) has assembled academic staff from five departments (AP, ABCT, FSN, BME, CEE) within three faculties (FS, FENG and FCE) of PolyU to research on the relevant topics of the three areas, including nano research for functional device, clean energy and environmental applications, biomedical and healthcare technologies. In the last decade, more and more researchers have involved in nano research research field and a number of works by PolyU have been done in nanomaterials, multifunctional nano devices, nanotechnology for biomedicine and sustainable development. On the other hand, the University of Waterloo (UW) holds Canada's largest nanotechnology institute, namely Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) committed to the UN sustainable development goals.
Nowadays nano research is almost linked to every field of science and engineering. The discovery of new phenomena in nanoscience and development of new technology at nanoscale enables advances across diverse technologies, from advanced electronic/optoelectronic devices and systems to sustainable energy and environmental protection to biomedicine and healthcare. Nanoscience and nanotechnology is truly interdisciplinary, which covers a very broad application area. It is worth mentioning that the “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology” is one of the most important and promising subjects in science and engineering. In the past decades, many Nobel Prizes are directly or indirectly related to this subject.
The RCNN aims to advance fundamental knowledge of nano research, initiate collaborative research activities for cutting edge applications, and promote knowledge transfer.
Vision:
To be a world-class nano research centre in advancing fundamental knowledge and innovations of nano science and technology for scientific and societal impact.
Objectives:
· To bring together researchers from different disciplines and combine their expertise of nanoscience and nanotechnology to address societal challenges.
· To create a research platform in shared facilities and support impactful programs, education and knowledge transfer of technology.
· To secure major research fund and create interdisciplinary activities focused on some key themes.
· To build regional, national and international reputation in nano research of PolyU and enhance the visibility of PolyU in the subject of nanoscience and nanotechnology.
