Prof. Benny Cheung, Associate Director of Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RCSV); Director of State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology; Professor, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, PolyU, was interviewed by RTHK’s TV programme “IT New Era” to introduce Ultra-precision Machining Technology.
Ultra-precision machining is a technology which harnesses processing techniques such as cutting and polishing in the vicinity of 1μm, which is 1/100 of a diameter of a human hair, to alter an object’s surface in order to equip it with new functions. The technology can be applied to multiple areas including myopia control. Prof. Cheung’s team has been conducting a series of research projects on bionic structured surfaces to develop enhanced lenses.
It is estimated myopia requiring visual correction will affect 49.8% of the world’s population by 2050. Complications associated with myopia are emerging in school-age children. RCSV aims to significantly advance the current understanding of eye growth control mechanism and develop impactful therapeutic approaches for those with myopia-related ocular complications. Prof. Cheung collaborates with Prof. To Chi-ho, Director of RCSV; Head of the School of Optometry; Henry G. Leong, Professor in Elderly Vision Health and Chair Professor of Experimental Optometry, and a Hong Kong-based start-up, Vision Science and Technology Company Limited (VST), in the development of a novel Nanostructured Defocus-Incorporated Spectacle (NDIS) Lens. The research team employs novel optics designs, ultra-precision machining technology, and proprietary testing methods for precision manufacturing of the NIDIS lenses for myopia control, which, if successful, will definitely benefit the global myopic population.
