SU Research Group

We are a Hong Kong-based research group dedicated to both the fundamental research of Ultrasonics and ultrasonics-enabled engineering and bio-engineering applications such as Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Acoustofluidics. Our key research interests lie primarily in a broad area including ultrasonics, wave propagation, guided-wave-based SHM, sensor and sensor network, non-destructive evaluation, smart materials and structures, and advanced composites.

Introducing A New Computational Platform for Calculating Guided Wave Dispersion - SAFEDC (05-2024)

We are thrilled to present the latest development of a free software to calculate the dispersive properties of physical guided waves in acoustoelastic and complex waveguides. Developed based on a semi-analytical finite element method, we name this freeware SAFEDC. This freeware can now be downloaded via the following link https://sourceforge.net/projects/safedc/.

About The Group

The SU Research Group is dedicated to both the fundamental and applied research in the field of ultrasonics, structural health monitoring (SHM), non-destructive evaluation (NDE), elastic wave propagation, smart materials and structures, sensor and sensor network, and advanced composite materials. It enjoys burgeoning growth since its establishment in 2007, consistently outputting high-quality publications in top-tier journals and securing research grants from various sources. In the pursuit for excellence, the Group is proactively applying research achievements to real-world engineering applications, and recent paradigms include the SHM technique/system developed for high-speed trains, space assets, and aircraft structures. The Group is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, enabling innovative research and development of cutting-edge technologies. With recognition from peers and colleagues, the Group has networked with dozens of research groups at the frontier of today’s SHM technology, with solid partnership from Australia, China, Poland, Republic of Korea, the USA, the UK and many others.

Editorships

Ultrasonics is the only internationally established journal which covers the entire spectrum of ultrasound research, technology and applications. Ultrasonics contains a variety of sections to keep its readers abreast of the state of the art in both fundamental investigation and real-world development related to ultrasonics. Ultrasonics publishes papers of exceptional quality and of relevance to both academia and industry. Manuscripts in which ultrasonics is the core and not simply an incidental tool or secondary issue are welcomed.

Structural Health Monitoring: An International Journal is an international peer reviewed journal that publishes the highest quality original research that contain theoretical, analytical, and experimental investigations that advance the body of knowledge and its application in the discipline of structural health monitoring. The journal has a broad topical coverage and it serves as a primary reference for the structural health monitoring of aeronautical, mechanical, civil, electrical, and other systems. The multidisciplinary nature of the journal is intended to foster the intersection of different technologies to address the varied needs and applications for structural health monitoring.

I am looking for self-motivated students who have strong passion and genuine wish to pursue his/her PhD degrees with me, in the general disciplines of structural health monitoring, NDE, ultrasonics, wave propagation, sensor technology, and nanocomposites. Full scholarships are available. In the meantime, I am also seeking mature researchers with sound knowledge and experience in SHM, NDE, ultrasonics, and sensing technology. The available posts include Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Research Fellow or Research Associate. Interested applicants please contact Prof. Su.

PhD Candidates

Full PhD scholarship is available. Successful applicants are expected to have (i) a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree from recognized universities; (ii) sound knowledge in solid mechanics, or materials, or mechanical engineering; (iii) relevant research experience; and (iv) fulfilment of language requirements for those who do not have a degree for which English was the language of instruction (6.5+ in IELTS, or 80+ in TOEFL).

Research Personnel
