The first RI-IWEAR Research Seminar Successfully Completed

The first RI-IWEAR research seminar: Smart Sensing technologies was successfully completed on 24 Nov 2021 with the online participation of over 250 people. Director of RI-IWEAR Gave Interview on Clothing Industry Development

Professor Tao Xiaoming, Director of Research Institute for Intelligent Wearable Systems and Vincent and Lily Woo Professor in Textile Technology of ITC, made an opinion on the challenge faced by the industry-pollution. RI-IWEAR Scholars Ranked in the Top 1% by Citations

Two RI-IWEAR members have been ranked in the top 1% by citation for field and year in the Web of Science released by Clarivate™. The Highly Cited Researchers™ list identifies scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant influence through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade.   Researchers are selected for their exceptional performance in one or more of 21 fields (those used in the Essential Science Indicators™, or ESI) or across several fields. All Highly Cited Researcher records are reviewed. Factors such as retractions, misconduct, and extreme self-citation—all of which would detract from true community-wide research influence—may lead to an author being excluded from the list. The number of those with cross-field influence is determined by finding those who have influence equivalent to those identified in the 21 fields. For 2021 Highly Cited Researchers analysis, the papers surveyed were the most recent papers available to us—those published and cited during 2010-2020 and which then ranked in the top 1% by citations for their ESI field and year (the definition of a highly cited paper).   Congratulations to our colleagues on their ranking in the top 1% by citation for field and year in the Web of Science released by Clarivate! New Publication in Science Advances

The rapid development of edge devices highly demands low-power electronics for effective data acquisition and intelligent information processing. The power consumption of an individual device is proportional to the square of the voltage. To reduce the operation voltage of electron devices, Dr. Yang Chai’s research team demonstrates a new type of transistor with sub-1 V operation voltage, which is recently published in Science Advances 2021, 7: eabf8744. They adopt atomic-level thick two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor as the channel of a transistor and transfer metal gate to 2D MoS2 for forming a high-quality interface at room temperature. The high–barrier height Pt-MoS2 Schottky junction replaces the commonly used metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor and has intrinsically high junction capacitance and a high-quality interface. This MoS2 transferred metal gate (TMG) field-effect transistor shows sub-1 V operation voltage and a subthreshold slope close to the thermal limit (60 mV/dec). The TMG and the back gate of the TMG transistors enable logic functions in a single transistor with a small footprint, exhibiting promising low-power applications for edge computing.

RI-IWEAR’s Works are Recorded in the HKRITA Centre Report

RI-IWEAR members' work Green Textile Research and Far-Infrared Functional Textiles are introduced at the latest centre report of The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel Limited (HKRITA) that is funded by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government and hosted by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This kind of Green Textile developed by RI-IWEAR Director Prof. Xiaoming TAO and Dr. Polly LEUNG is a blend of PLA and PHBV, have proven to be an eco-friendly yet equally durable alternative to synthetic fibres. The anti-bacterial properties of the PLA/PHBV fabric have been confirmed that has up to 99% against Cocci, Escherichia coli, Candida Pasteurella, and that PHBV oligomers can destroy the bacterial cell wall layer by layer. This bio-based textile is not only odour-resistant, but also repels superbugs like the more dangerous and notoriously drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, preventing tough-to treat cross-infections. Prof. Li LI and Prof. Feng YAN cooperate to develop the new Far-Infrared functional textiles. This textile is combined physical methods with an optical simulation system and provide better thermal protection than traditional far-infrared ones that are made of chemicals such as metallic oxide, nonmetallic oxide and metal, while also promoting blood circulation and metabolism. RI-IWEAR Scholars Ranked Amongst the World’s Top 2% Scientists

Fourteen RI-IWEAR members were recognised as the top 2% of scientists in the world. The report was released by a team of experts led by Prof. John Ioannidis of Stanford University and the latest version was published on 20 October 2021. This ranking identifies the top scholars in their speciality whose publications are most frequently cited by other authors for career-long impact. The publicly available database of over 100,000 top scientists provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator. Dr Dahua SHOU’ s Team Won TechConnect Award

Dr Dahua SHOU’s team was awarded a prestigious prize at this year’s TechConnect World Innovation Conference and Expo (TechConnect) in Washington DC on 18 OCTOBER, 2021. They had developed a nature-inspired ‘sweatable’ textile material capable of ultra-fast sweat dissipation. Sweatextile: A Nature-Inspired Textile of Unidirectional Water Transport and Dissipation for Moisture Management, Comfort and Protection by Dr SHOU Dahua, Professor FAN Jintu and Dr WEI Xin, Institute of Textiles and Clothing Going beyond the capabilities of existing wicking textiles, Sweatextile mimics the perspiration action of human skin, quickly directing and dissipating excessive sweat as water droplets on the outer surface, keeping the wearer dry, comfortable, and having greater energy and endurance. Advisory Committee on Textile and Clothing Industries Visit

The 51st meeting of the Advisory Committee on Textile and Clothing Industries took place on 7 October 2021. The external members, who have a wide range of expertise, attended the meeting and offered very constructive suggestions and feedback to the department regarding its efforts for future development. After the meeting, RI-IWEAR Director Prof. Xiaoming TAO and institute members Prof. Bingang XU, Prof. Hong HU, Prof. Li LI, Prof. Kinor JIANG, Prof. John XIN, Prof. Jintu FAN, Dr. Tao HUA and Dr. Tracy MOK displayed recent research achievements to the committee members and introduced the development of intelligent wearable technologies related to the textile industry.

RI-IWEAR Director Presented to the Microelectronics Technology Forum

The Microelectronics Technology Forum, held 3–5 August 2021, was organised to gather brilliant minds from universities in the top echelon, promising tech start-ups, investors and world-leading corporations to share their views on the latest trends and opportunities in microelectronics. The three-day forum covered global microelectronics trends, business opportunities in emerging technologies and critical research infrastructure.  Prof. H.-S. She displayed a video showing RI-IWEAR’s research achievements and discussed the relationship between intelligent wearable systems and microelectronics as well as intelligent wearable technology based on microelectronics.  The session also included a panel discussion related to critical research infrastructure. Prof. Xiaoming TAO participated in the discussion as a panelist and provided her opinions on this topic.
