Biography
Dr. Dong is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received his BSc degree in Applied Chemistry in Taiyuan University of Technology in 2006, and both MSc and PhD degrees in Analytical Chemistry from the Central South University in 2009 and 2013, respectively. Before his appointment as a Research Assistant Professor, he served as a Research Associate and Postdoctoral Fellow in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Hong Kong.
His research mainly focuses on the analysis of large-scale metabolomics and proteomics data derived from liquid-chromatography hyphenated by tandem mass spectrometry using machine learning algorithms and statistical methods, to develop easy-to-use tool and algorithms to answer the biological questions at hand accurately and confidently. This includes (i) the identifications of metabolites, proteins and protein post-translational modifications; (ii) the quantifications of these biological molecules; and (iii) the interpretations of the analytical results for answering biological questions, e.g., discovery of biomarkers related to a disease, using the machine learning algorithms and statistical methods. Currently, Dr. Dong’s research aims to understand the physiological mechanisms in ageing and ageing related diseases and the health benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCMs) using multi-omics (metabolomics and proteomics) techniques, to provide scientific evidence for the medical community and general public supporting and promoting their proper use.
