Biography

Dr Derek Yau was trained in physiotherapy at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is a registered physiotherapist and clinical exercise physiologist with extensive clinical experience covering various specialities which included orthopaedics, medical, cardiopulmonary, surgical, neurological, paediatric, and hospice care. Throughout his professional career, he worked in various specialties at different settings, ranging from critical care units to community rehabilitation services. He is particularly interested in treating musculoskeletal conditions, utilising exercise therapy, and managing patients suffering from chronic pain.

He then further obtained his MSc in Medicine (Pain Management) from the University of Sydney and PhD in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. During his PhD study, he was awarded several scholarships because of his academic and research excellence. Before joining RS, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and led a few research projects on multimodal prehabilitation interventions for frail patients undergoing major surgery. His research interests include exercise therapy, frailty management, perioperative management and pain management. His aspiration is to develop as a clinician-scientist and as an enlightening tutor of the primers in the future.

Apart from the appointment as the Assistant Professor at the department, he is also appointed as the Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and elected as the Executive committee member of the Hong Kong Physiotherapists’ Union.
