Biography

After obtaining the Professional Diploma in Occupational Therapy from the former Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1984, Serena started her Occupational Therapy career in public acute general hospitals and in major rehabilitation hospitals, including physical and psychiatric services. All along, Serena has impressed her colleagues with her foresight and sense of innovation in the application of evidence-based advanced technology in her department. She was elected as the co-chair of COC in Occupational Therapy in Hospital Authority. Before she left Hospital Authority, she was the Centre Head of Community Rehabilitation Services Support Centre in Hospital Authority, utilizing transdisciplinary approach, focusing on tertiary rehabilitation services including Driver Rehabilitation, Sexual Counselling and Rehab, and Advanced Assistive Technology for the Disabled. She has been serving as member and chair in various professional governing boards and councils of HKSAR for over 20 years. Besides, she has been invited as professional consultant in Social Welfare Department, NGOs and HK Housing Society especially in development of Aging in Place and several new Elderly Housing projects.

She has been holding cutting edge research to initiate and implement several major service developments in HA e.g., Brian-computer Interface in Cognitive rehab, Tailor-made Virtual Reality applications as treatment modalities. Occupational Lifestyle Redesign Program for stroke patients and Wellbeing promotion in mental health services which signified an important advancement of the professional practice in HK. Recognitions and appreciations from working partners, staff colleagues and her patients were remarkable. She was awarded with Outstanding Staff by HA in 2017. In 2021, she led the clinical team of Community Rehabilitation Services Support Centre to achieve the award of Outstanding Team of HA.

Furthermore, she diligently serves in teaching work and being appointed as Adjunct Professor in OT colleges of Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Tung Wah College for several years. Before joining HKPU as Principal Clinical Associate, she has been teaching as Assistant Professor in Tung Wah College. She remains as a very productive editor, reviewer and author in several peer-reviewed journals throughout the years. She has published several important journal papers and has been awarded Research Grant from research committee of HA.
