Delegation from Development Bureau and Civil Engineering and Development Department visit SCRI

A delegation led by Mr Ricky LAU, JP, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) of Development Bureau and Mr Michael FONG, JP, Director of Civil Engineering and Development, visited the Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI) on 24 November 2023 for exploring potential research collaboration opportunities. During the visit, the delegation was introduced to some of SCRI’s research innovations including the 3D mobile mapping systems and the smart city platform.

SCRI MC Member receives best paper award at international conference

Congratulation to Prof. LU Haitian, Management Committee Member of the Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI), for receiving the Best Paper Award for his paper titled “Extracting Scenarios from Autonomous-Vehicle-Involved Crashes” at the 18th International Conference on Intelligent Systems and Knowledge Engineering held in Fuzhou, China on 17–19 November 2023.

SCRI Scholars Ranked Among World's Top 2% Most-cited Scientists 2023

13 scholars from SCRI were ranked as the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in the newly released metrics compiled by Stanford University.   The latest ranking compiled by Stanford University covers covers over 100,000 top scientists across the globe. The database grouped scientists under 22 subject fields and 174 sub-fields, and the ranking was compiled based on indicators of research publications, including information on citations, individual’s scientific research output, co-authorship and a composite indicator for career-long citation impact up to the end of 2022.   *As per the data published by Elsevier on 4 October 2023 (version 6):  https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/6

SCRI hosts Global Smart Cities Summit cum the 3rd International Conference on Urban Informatics attracting over 500 global scholars and industry professionals

The Global Smart Cities Summit cum the 3rd International Conference on Urban Informatics (GSCS & ICUI 2023), organised by the International Society for Urban Informatics (ISUI) and the PolyU Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI), commenced on 21 August 2023. The three-day conference has attracted over 500 participants globally and over 230 speakers shared their insights and research on urban informatics and smart cities. At the Opening Ceremony, Prof. SUN Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, HKSAR Government, delivered the opening address. He said, “I wish to thank PolyU for bringing together experts, researchers, industry players, policy makers and investors from around the world, who are strong advocates for smart cities, at this biennale event in Hong Kong. I am sure you are all looking forward to, and will benefit from, the enlightening sharing by the many distinguished speakers in the week to come.” Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, said, “Smart cities research is one of PolyU’s strategic development areas. We have been working on topics including smart city and spatial big data analytics, remote sensing, and geomatics computing for many years. In 2020, we took a big step by establishing the Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Smart Cities Research Institute, which is hosted within the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research - the largest research platform of its kind in the Greater Bay Area. Through mission-driven interdisciplinary research, PolyU aims to solve pressing societal challenges and foster a more sustainable future for our world.” GSCS & ICUI 2023 aims at promoting global smart city development and advances in urban informatics. This year’s conference received 300 abstract submissions from 21 countries and regions. As an emerging interdisciplinary field, urban informatics is the foundational science and technology for smart cities. The Conference features keynote speeches by internationally leading scientists, forums and technology innovation exhibitions. It provides an excellent platform for exchanging information about state-of-the-art technologies and innovations in smart cities and urban informatics. In addition to encouraging academia-industry collaboration and technological innovation, GSCS & ICUI 2023 aims to position Hong Kong as a vanguard of smart city development. Announced at the Opening Ceremony were introduction of the new ISUI Smart City Index jointly published by the ISUI and SCRI, and developed by a team led by SCRI Director Prof. John Wenzhong SHI; as well as the winners of the Outstanding Achievement Award in Urban Informatics. The ISUI Smart City Index is the first index for evaluating smart-city development that is fully based on publicly available data. With 98 indicators focusing on the impact that smart cities have on the day-to-day lives of citizens, the Index will be able to help cities self-diagnose and improve their smart-city development comprehensively from a human-centric perspective. The Outstanding Achievement Award in Urban Informatics honours world-renowned scholars in recognition of their significant contributions to the field of Urban Informatics. Prof. John SHI introduces SCRI developments at Zhongguancun Forum

Prof. John SHI Wenzhong, Director of the Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Smart City Research Institute (SCRI), shared the developments at SCRI at the “International Forum on Beijing–Hong Kong Scientific and Technological Innovation” in the “2023 Zhongguancun Forum” held in Beijing, China, on 29 May 2023. Smart Cities Session at PAIR Conference 2023 Held Successfully on 11 May 2023

The PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) Conference 2023, the first and the largest event in Hong Kong higher education dedicated to professional knowledge exchange on interdisciplinary research and development, was held successfully on 8–11 May 2023. Themed on “Research Excellence for Societal Impacts”, the four-day event drew over 100 internationally renowned scholars and experts from different disciplines as distinguished speakers to share their knowledge and insights. SCRI Programme - Smart Cities Session at PAIR Conference was successfully held on 11 May 2023, attracting over 160 participants joining on site and online. SCRI would like to express sincere gratitude to the keynote speaker Prof. ZHU Jiasong (on behalf of Prof. LI Qingquan) and the technical speakers, including Dr KWAN Shun‐hang Julian, Mr TSOI Cheong‐wai, Dr ZHU Xiaolin, Ir WAT Ben, Ms WONG Pui Yu, Amy (on behalf of Sr CHAN Yue‐chun), Prof. John SHI and Prof. JIN Ying for sharing their expertise in the field of smart cities.

First PAIR Conference coming in May!

PAIR is organising the first PAIR Conference 2023 – Research Excellence for Societal Impacts, in hybrid mode (online and on PolyU campus), on 8–11 May 2023 (Monday–Thursday).    The four-day PAIR Conference is the first and the largest event in Hong Kong higher education dedicated to professional knowledge exchange on interdisciplinary research and development. It provides a platform for professional exchange and closer collaboration among stakeholders from various fields in industry, academia, and governments around the world to build the capacities in science, technology, innovation and research.   Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI) as one of constituent research institute under PAIR, will contribute a one-day programme on 11 May 2023, Thursday (Day 4).   SCRI session will include a keynote session and several technical sessions on various topics regarding Sustainable and Smart Cities, poster sessions as well as lab visit. SCRI project wins ET Net Smart Living Partnership Awards 2022

An interactive platform for COVID-19 status and risk prediction developed by the Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI) won the “Outstanding One-stop Virus Decision Support Platform” award in the “Health Technology (HealthTech)” category of the ETNet Smart Living Partnership Awards 2022.  An award presentation ceremony was held on 27 February 2023 at Cyberport.   Funded by the Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM), the platform provides spatiotemporal predictions for COVID-19 symptom onset risk in future three days for Hong Kong, other cities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), Taiwan, Malaysia, etc.   Congratulations to the SCRI research team!
