“It was good to work with professional designers, to understand how a large-scale social project should work, to understand how pre-production work should be prepared, and to gain other practical experience.” – Rachel LEE
Rachel was a social design intern majoring in social projects at Making on Loft Ltd (MOL), a private community design and research organization.
Learning Goals and Outcomes
Before her internship, Rachel wanted to deepen her understanding of social and interactive design, communication design, and the workings of a design process. She also wanted to explore the community in more detail than before and discover all of its interesting aspects and people.
During her internship, Rachel was assigned a cultural playground research project called “Snapshare! Share your experiences of travelling in Hong Kong.” The project aimed to collect traveler data and facilitate the exchange of Hong Kong travel experiences in a quick, simple, and fun way. While conducting community research for this project, she learnt the importance of connecting with neighbours to gain insights into a local community.
Internship Outputs and Amazing Experiences
Rachel gained invaluable practical experience throughout her internship. She enjoyed working with students from other disciplines and learning design skills that, as a social design student, she had not previously encountered.
Rachel’s workplace supervisor admired her good interpersonal skills, energy in the workplace, and diligence. Moreover, the supervisor appreciated Rachel’s contributions and her ability to complete research and development tasks related to community planning and design. The supervisor hoped that Rachel had not only gained valuable work experience but also developed an understanding of the core values of MOL.
