Designing with Japanese locals

Students from our Social Design, Digital Media and Interactive Media programmes joined together to collaborate with 39 Media Engineering students from Chukyo University, Japan to work on topics of sustainability and local craftsmanship last summer, led by Teaching Fellow Mr. Alex Ho. The project theme is about sustainable development and gratitude education. The students stayed in Japan for eleven days, where they did contextual research with the counterparts by visiting the timber forest om Toyota, wood factory, local craft workshops as well as a hands-on one-day woodcraft class with a local carpenter. They also investigated and exchanged knowledge with Japanese students and local people on cultural differences, natural resources and local craftsmanship while having their own self-driven field research on digital media related topics which the Digital Media students were good at. At the end of the study trip, they held a public exhibition at the Toyota Parenting Integrated Center in downtown Toyota, showing their handmade wood and bamboo toys for children, and introducing the importance of sustainable use of resources and preservation of local craftsmanship to family visitors there, actualising what they have learned to affect others in the general public. Parents and children were invited to play their toys and were explained about sustainability and gratitude towards our mother nature. The group led by Michael Chan and Ivy Kong was invited by the Kyoto government and its Education Department, and supported by Japan’s NGO Roots to contribute their cross-disciplinary knowledge to the local economy. Their mission was to attract tourists through architecture and a comprehensive marketing plan in a sustainable approach. Having conducted a research in the community and with local high school students, a tourist attracting treehouse was nicely built by the students from scratch in a spot surrounded by the natural environment. Outstanding alumnus Raman Hui named the InnoStar

Mr. Raman Hui, winner of the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 2009, recently received the InnoStars Award 2019. He is among the six awardees who are recognized as outstanding Hong Kong people with remarkable achievements in innovation and creativity. The Award organized by the Our Hong Kong Foundation is established with the aim to inspire more Hong Kong people to engage in innovation and promote a diversified economy in Hong Kong. Congratulations! “The urge to overcome different challenges stimulates my creative ideas.” —Raman Hui, Animator and Film Director   With Raman’s enthusiasm for animation and unremitting efforts, he participated in the production of a series of celebrated motion pictures such as Antz and Shrek, and snatched over 30 international awards. Although he has launched a splendid career in animation in the US, he feels that his roots are still in Hong Kong. Raman returned to Hong Kong for the production of Monster Hut, in which he pioneered a daring trial of incorporating overseas experiences into Chinese traditions, and went on to swiftly break the box office record in mainland China. Having been on an adventure from Hong Kong to Hollywood by himself, Raman has come back to the China market. The disparate cultures and acculturation issues did not stop him, but it is exactly the urge to overcome these challenges that stimulates his creative ideas, showcasing the spirits of flexibility and innovation.      

Meatless Meat Relocation, Best of Show & Gold — HK4As Students’ Award 2019

As reported earlier that our Advertising Design students have received awards at the the HK4As Students' Award this year. A team was named the Gold Award winner which is also the Best of Show in Student Awards, and other teams won 3 Merit Awards. (full story)  The ‘Meatless Meat Relocation’ campaign is the Best of Show and Gold winner. The project team is consisted of 4 members: Cheng Tsz Yin, Cheung Chi Ho, Ng Wing Ki, Wong Chun Hei.  The Meatless Meat project aids meatless meat to move out from the meat area in supermarkets and stores and into the vegetable area where they are supposed to be.  Let’s take a detail look of what the campaign wants to do.   MEATLESS™ MEAT (Meatless Meat Relocation 重置家園計劃) Brief: Create an integrated campaign for the launch of Meatless Meat in Hong Kong  Problem and insight: When you do grocery shopping, you won't expect vegetables to be displayed in meat areas right? Yet we were surprised by our insights where many supermarkets would display meatless meat with frozen meat together. Meatless meat is like composed vegetable, it is made from ingredients like beans, especially soybeans and tofu, nuts, grains, seeds or mushrooms. Displaying these composed vegetable in meat areas is like trying hard to make them ‘fit in’ to the meat category. Hence, the Meatless Meat Relocation is an integrated campaign that helps meatless meat to be their real self – Vegetable. Solution: In order to own a real home of oneself, we helped them to move home to the vegetable area where they are supposed to be in, so that they don't have ‘fit in’ to the meat area, and they get to standout by being their real self. New Faculty Members On Board

A warm welcome to our new academic staff members! Professor Stephen Wang, Professor Prof. Stephen J. Wang joins the PolyU Design family from the Royal College of Art (RCA) where he was the joint Head of Programme for the Global Innovation Design and Innovation Design Engineering programmes.  He was also the RCA Director of the RCA-IIS Tokyo Design Lab and ITIDLab.com.  As a world-renowned expert in innovative design and tangible interaction design, he serves at the Australian Research Council as a detailed assessor and peer reviewer for a number of journals across the fields of design and engineering.  Prof. Wang is the inventor of the Virtual-Spine Platform (VSP) and has extensive experience and a strong track record of industry collaboration in the areas of intelligent architectural development, smart furniture, intelligent systems for healthcare, and medical devices and solutions. Prof. Wang will be contributing to the development of Interaction Design as a Professor with his interdisciplinary background that combines computational approaches for design. Full profile here   Dr Yi-Teng Shih, Assistant Professor PolyU Design's Product Design discipline will be welcoming Dr Yi-Teng Shih aboard as Assistant Professor.  He will join us with extensive teaching and research experiences in mechanical design, new product development, and design tools and processes.  Dr Shih joins us from Nottingham Ningbo's China campus.  He has considerable industry experience and his portfolio ranges from consumer electronics to healthcare devices, including projects for Brookstone, RadioShack, Beurer, FORA and JustHerb.  His supervision in design has won more than 50 international design awards and seven patents in the past few years, including the Red Dot Design Award, IDEA Awards, A’ DESIGN Award, European Product Design Award and The International Design Awards. Full profile here   Kevin Denney, Professor of Practice (Social Innovation) We are happy to announce that Mr Kevin Denney will be joining PolyU Design as Professor of Practice (Social Innovation).   Kevin is a Design Strategist.  He hails from Chicago where he did his graduate studies at the IIT, Institute of Design.  Kevin’s focus is on designing cities for health and prosperity.  In his work in industry and academia, Kevin emphasizes the importance of developing models and frameworks that enhance collaboration across domains. Kevin will work closely with our Associate Dean King Chung Siu and Associate Professor Newman Lau to provide strategic leadership for a project related to cities for health and wellness in addition to his teaching in the Social Design programme.  They will work on identifying funding opportunities. 'The Arch', Best of Student Product Design at A&D Trophy Awards 2019

Introducing 'The Arch', winner of The Best of Student Product Design award at the A&D Trophy Awards 2019. The Arch is a furniture design that explores the idea of function following form; the movement of a person rolling over was translated into sections of the object. These sections were then joined, creating a long bench with a dynamic outline and changing topography. The size and shape of the arches below change with every section, annotating the movement in different states. Placed together as a complete bench, users can sit on both sides and fit into the PU foam with different postures. They can be separated or used in combinations: a sitting object with a side table, a sofa or a stool. Jörn Bühring presents at the 2nd World Eco-Design Conference

Our Research Assistant Professor Dr. Jörn Bühring was invited to give a talk on ‘Toward Sustainable Futures: Foresight and Design as a New Paradigm in Support of Strategic Decision-making’ to over 1000 participants at the 2nd World Eco-Design Conference held in Guangzhou, China, on 5-7 December 2019. He was invited to join the organizing committee in their forward-planning activities for next year's event to expand on a research and industry collaboration platform with specific focus around green technology in design and internet ecosystems.  At a post conference workshop, Dr. Bühring was asked to assist in a joint research proposal with the Sun Yet-Sen University and Nanfang College the Greater Bay Area as a focal point for research collaboration and funding. His presentation topic was selected for a special issue in the Journal of Cleaner Production.
