- ITF project: Anti-viral and Anti-microbial Durable Disinfectant Coatings for Facemask
Details
This project aims to develop a series of eco-friendly durable disinfectants, which can be applied on facemask and other personal belongings for health protection against viral and bacterial infection. Previously, we have discovered that Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) oligomer and its homologues exhibit effective wide-spectrum anti-viral and antimicrobial properties. In this project, two technique routes will be further investigated for preparing effective anti-viral disinfectant. PHB oligomer and its homologues will be produced by synthetization or hydrolysis, followed by compounding into disinfectant. Anti-viral and anti-microbial mask will be fabricated through coating technology with the disinfectants. The anti-viral and anti-microbial effects of both the disinfectant and face mask will be evaluated, as well as the safety test, e.g. allergy and toxicity.
APPLICATION
The manufacturing technology and prototypes will help the elderly users to improve their quality of life by wearing the masks with excellent antimicrobial and anti-virus property, which can also help them to reduce the health risks to become sick. The antiviral and antibacterial face masks will reduce the secondary contamination upon disposal.
TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGH
The manufacturing technology can pave a way to produce durable antiviral and antimicrobial mask with advantages in terms of effectiveness, health and environmental benefits.
INDUSTRY BENEFIT
The project will enhance the competitive power of textile and healthcare companies in the market, and thus increase the economic in HKSAR. It will also benefit future development of a leading research center in the relevant field, and cultivate a lot of young researchers. The successful adoption of the technology and products will enhance healthcare, polymer, textile and recycling industries with good prospect to explore new markets and products.
ITF project: Key Technologies of Customized Intelligent Medical Pressure Clothing
Details
This project aims to investigate and develop key enabling technologies for future supply chains of customized intelligent medical pressure stocking (CIMPS), and it mainly includes five parts:
1. A new method and algorithm to quickly extract key parameters from the 3D body scanning data for design of CIMPS.
2. CAD/CIM module with the pressure prediction functions for CIMPS.
3. Customized medical compression stockings and pressure monitoring MCSs including sensors, circuits, data transmission and analysis software, display and power supply.
4. Interface for precise pressure-mapping of compression stockings based on the bionic morphing leg mannequin developed in our ongoing ITF project.
5. A novel multi-dimensional adjustable leg mannequin for more accurately simulate human legs will be designed and manufactured.
ITF project: Trial: Green functional underwear for elderly with limited mobility
Details
In the face of the social aging population challenge, the healthcare problem of elderly patients becomes crucial. Many elderly individuals who depend on a wheelchair or bed hold the same position for a long time, causing ischemia and lack of oxygen in the compression area. Besides, the friction between ischemic skin and the contact hard surface often induces skin lesions and eventually pressure ulcers. Meanwhile, skin and soft tissue infections are common in the elderly. The types of organisms that cause infections are diverse, and include bacterial, viral and fungal infections.
To improve the living environment of the elderly, the aims of the project are (1) to develop co-knitted printed enviro-friendly functional fabrics, underwear and socks with natural anti-microbial properties, supreme smoothness and handle, (2) to conduct evaluation trials in a NGO nursing home for elderly with limited mobility (ELM) in addition to laboratory tests.
APPLICATION
The socks are manufactured by PHBV/PLA/cotton blended yarns according to the special requirement of elderly with limited mobility, while the garments are fabricated by Co-knitting, printing, finishing, cutting and sewing.
The enviro-friendly underwear and socks obtain natural anti-microbial properties against S. aureus, K. pneumoniae and C. albicans, supreme smoothness and good abrasion resistance, thermal conductivity, handle feel and without Odor.
The manufacturing technology and prototypes will help the elderly with limited mobility to improve their quality of life by wearing the enviro-friendly degradable underwear and socks; meanwhile it can also help them to reduce the health risks to become sick.
TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGH
This is a new technology in either textile and rehabilitation field. Doctors, professional rehabilitation therapist, PD patients, family members of PD patients and related organization are the target groups.
INDUSTRY BENEFIT
The technology helps PD patients to monitor their mobility status and provide signals to them to overcome FOG, and assist the clinician to design and evaluate the rehabilitation status, and provide an effective method to understand the FOG and “on-off” phenomenon of PD patients. Therefore, it will release the symptom of Parkinson’s disease and benefit to extend the life of PD patients.
The group members of this project are from different research areas including textiles, electronics, computer, and rehabilitation science. The outcome of the project and the unique database of relevant patients will inspire new finding in the secret of Parkinson’s disease, which may benefit to release the heavy medical burden due to Hong Kong to be ageing society.
The successful adoption of the technology and products will broaden the traditional textiles, health care, and rehabilitation devices and electronics industry will good prospect to enter new markets and develop new products, which may increase the competitive power of companies in the market.
ITF project: Trial: Intelligent wearable system for enhancing mobility of people with Parkinson’s disease (Easypacer)
Details
The most distinct symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) are movement ("motor") related. Freezing of gait (FOG) is one of the major risk factors of falls that is a high prevalence for the persons with PD starting from the moderate stages of the disease. Parkinson's disease can’t be charmed away, however, medications, surgery, and physical rehabilitation can improve motor symptoms of people with PD. Due to cueing is a common rehabilitation strategy to overcome FOG in people with PD. External cues can help an individual to focus on walking and shift the attention back to walking when FOG occurs; thereby facilitate the gait initiation and/or continuation process.
This project is to develop an intelligent wearable system incorporated with in-situ fabric pressure sensors and accelerometer. The system not only can detect freezing of gait (FOG), but provide cueing (auditory or visual) to PD patients when they appear FOG.
APPLICATION
The model for FOG detection will be set up according to the posture parameters analysis of the PD patients.
The system for PD will be designed, packaged and optimized to detect FOG and provide a cueing to the PD when the patient appears FOG.
The trial use will be conducted in an indoor laboratory environment at PolyU under collaboration with Hong Kong Parkinson’s Disease Association. The system can be used as rehabilitation system and assist the clinician to evaluate the effect of training and cueing for the rehabilitation of PD.
TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGH
The enviro-friendly underwear and socks obtain excellent antimicrobial, superior softness and good abrasion resistance function for elderly with limited mobility.
INDUSTRY BENEFIT
The project will enhance the competitive power of textile and healthcare companies in the market, and thus increase the economic in HKSAR.
The green functional underwear will also enhance peoples’ awareness of environmental protection, and contribute to extend the market share of eco-friendly products, and bring long-term significance to our whole society.
The successful adoption of the technology and products will enhance polymer, textile and recycling industries with good prospect to explore new markets and products.
