Ms. Yilly Lin

Outstanding Student Mentee 2024

Biography

Ms. Lin is a 2024 graduate who completed her Master’s degree in International Hospitality Management. Her proposer, Ms. Renee Kim, General Manager of Regala Skycity Hotel, complimented her by saying:

Early in February 2024, I received an email from Yilly (Sining) following Dr. Eric Chan’s email announcing the matches of mentees and mentors. In the email, she briefly introduced herself and attached her resume. She thanked me for participating in the program and for giving her the opportunity to be my mentee. She also invited me to the luncheon, expressing her desire to seize the opportunity to meet and communicate with me at the event. From the tone of her email, I could immediately sense her excitement and eagerness to meet someone in the industry and to make the best of the opportunity for both herself and me.

Since our first meeting at the mentorship Luncheon, she has been well-prepared to maximize the benefits of our time together. She prepared a list of topics and questions in advance and provided me with a copy for our future meetings. She diligently took notes, asked more questions, and expressed appreciation for her learnings. Despite my busy schedule, I made my best efforts not to miss any of our monthly meetings because I was delighted to meet with Yilly, who was so eager to learn.

When Yilly was applying for jobs, the industry was experiencing economic challenges, making it difficult to find a job she wanted at the time. I asked her if she would like me to help her. She told me that it would violate the school rules if she asked for mentor’s help in finding a job. She politely declined and insisted on finding a job on her own, resisting her own temptation. She was determined to make the job-searching journey another learning opportunity for herself -- and she did! As she completed her coursework, she found another place to live, applied for work visa, completed her part-time job, practiced her Cantonese, and so on, learning to be independent and managing her finances without relying on anyone. One day, she sent me a message with her graduation photo. I was disappointed that Yilly did not invite me to her graduation, but she simply did not want to trouble anyone to attend, as she always puts others before herself.

Yilly is a very pleasant person, always with a big smile and a grateful nature. She is mature and considerate of others, has a strong sense of responsibility, and possesses a high level of integrity along with outstanding work ethics. I have no doubt that she performed very well academically, will be a proud alumna of SHTM, and will be a great asset to any organization she chooses to join, as I have witnessed throughout the year I have been privileged to be her mentor.”
