Congratulations to Mr So Chung-him, a PhD student at the School, who has achieved the Third Place in the 2023 Mightex Research Excellence Prizes. The Mightex Research Excellence Prizes are designed to acknowledge outstanding scientific research conducted by research students and post-doctoral researchers using Mightex products. Chung-him is currently undertaking his PhD study under the guidance of Dr PAN Feng, with his research focusing on the mechanism of refractive error in the mouse retina.
Winning the Mightex Research Excellence Prize is a great encouragement for innovative ideas. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore and develop pioneering concepts that have the potential to solve scientific problems. I am thankful for the support of my supervisor, colleagues, and the School of Optometry. This award has motivated me to keep experimenting and pushing the boundaries of knowledge and creativity in my research projects.
Mr So Chung-him
PhD Student, School of Optometry
Chung-him's research is highly intriguing as it explores the biophysical responses of retinal ganglion cells when subjected to focused and defocused images in the context of myopia. The results of his study have offered significant insights into how retinal neurons encode visual information under myopic conditions. Moreover, the methodologies used in his research show potential for future applications in understanding the development of myopia and could possibly be applied to other neuron types.
