  • PolyU DBAI is a mixed-mode programme. Students may pursue their studies either full-time (taking 9 or more credits per semester) or part-time (normally taking less than 9 credits per semester).

Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

This programme aims to equip visionary leaders with a comprehensive understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Business Intelligence (BI), and Generative AI (Gen AI) in the context of modern business administration. It also aims to equip professionals with the expertise needed to effectively harness the power of AI and BI technologies. By merging advanced AI concepts with business strategies, the programme endeavours to cultivate leaders capable of navigating an ever-evolving business landscape, leveraging cutting-edge technologies, and fostering innovative solutions to address complex challenges in diverse industries.     
 

At the end of the programme, students will have acquired the knowledge, skills, and intellectual abilities necessary to achieve the general learning outcomes, in accordance with the specific learning objectives below:
 

General Business Knowledge

  • To broaden and enrich students’ understanding of the importance of digital technology transformation and technological innovations in the business world, while considering ethical implications.

Specialist Knowledge

  • To acquire in-depth expertise in digital technologies in the fields of AI, BI, and Gen AI, promoting students' continued professional growth and enhancing their lifelong learning capability in the AI era.

Applied Research Proficiency

  • To develop students' ability to independently conduct pioneering applied research in technology-driven business domains.

Accreditations

  • AACSB  
    The Faculty of Business was accredited by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) in 2010 in recognition of our business education.

  • EQUIS  
    The Faculty of Business was accredited by EQUIS (EFMD Quality Improvement System) in 2007 in recognition of our programmes, research, and associated activities.

 

International Collaboration

To strengthen the international dimension and academic rigour of the programme, collaborations have been established with the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland and The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in London, U.K. 

  • IMD was ranked sixth in the world for open and custom programmes in the 2023 Financial Times Executive Education ranking.

  • LSE was ranked third in Europe and sixth in the world for social and management subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024.


Technological Elements in the Curriculum

To help students embrace technological changes and digital transformation, five elements, namely Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Cloud Computing, Data Science, and Entrepreneurship, are embedded in a wide range of subjects.

 

Our curriculum aims to foster awareness of the impact of technological innovations, in addition to enabling students to manage data and adopt technology to tackle business and organisational problems while improving management and leadership.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

  • To be eligible for the Doctor of Business Artificial Intelligence award, students must meet all requirements of the University and the programme. The programme requirements are as follows:

    • 25 credits of coursework: 

      • 1 credit for Academic Integrity and Ethics (AIE)

      • 3 credits for Residentials: Residential 1 (1 credit) and Residential 2 (2 credits)

      • 24 credits of Coursework: 1 Compulsory, 1 Core, and 6 Elective Subjects (3 credits each)

      • 24 credits of Thesis: Thesis I (8 credits) and Thesis II (16 credits)

    • 3 credits for Residentials: Residential 1 (1 credit) and Residential 2 (2 credits)

    • 24 credits of Thesis: Thesis I (8 credits) and Thesis II (16 credits)

  • There is an opportunity to obtain a Master of Science in Management Research Studies (MSc in MRS) for students who have completed 1 credit for the AIE subject, 24 credits of Coursework subjects, 3 credits for the two compulsory Residentials, and successfully completed the 8 credits of Thesis I (thesis proposal presentation) (a total of 36 credits).

  • All taught subjects are at an advanced level, and students are expected to have prior knowledge of each subject area.

  • The curriculum includes technological content such as data analytics tools, digital technology and the business world, the impact of technology and AI on leadership, and qualitative and experimental designs in relation to AI and entrepreneurship research.

  • The curriculum is carefully designed to balance academic rigour with practical relevance. It includes foundational courses in business administration and specialised modules in AI and BI, Gen AI, and Prompt Engineering.

Remarks:
^ 1. Subject to factors such as staff availability, student enrolment, programme resources, etc.; not all subjects will be offered during the normal duration of study. Additionally, registration is subject to quota availability.  
2. The programme structure and subject details (e.g. subject description form, offering pattern, class timetable) are subject to review and change from time to time.
 

DBAI Residentials (3 credits)

There are 2 Residentials that are compulsory for all students:

DBAI Residential 1 is a mandatory orientation workshop scheduled at the beginning of the programme.

DBAI Residential 2 is a research workshop that normally takes place after students have completed all required subjects. The main objective of the workshop is to give students the opportunity to present their thesis proposal and to prepare them for writing their thesis.

 

DBAI Thesis (24 credits)

The DBAI Thesis comprises two parts: DBAI Thesis I and DBAI Thesis II. Students must pass 1 Compulsory subject, 1 Core subject, and at least 4 Elective subjects before starting their thesis. They must integrate and apply what they have learnt to critically and rigorously examine a topic of interest in the fields of AI and BI. They are expected to make a significant contribution and/or provide innovative insights.

Entrance Requirements
  • A Master’s degree, preferably in a field related to business, computer science, data science, economics, mathematics, statistics, or engineering; and

  • At least 5 years of significant managerial experience at a senior management level.

  • Individuals working in senior management positions or in roles related to artificial intelligence or data science, with a recognised first degree and membership in a recognised professional body, may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you are not a native speaker of English, and do not possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent qualification which is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purposes. Please refer to the “Admissions Requirements” section for details.

  • Most classes are scheduled on weekends, subject to final programme arrangement. 
Initial Registration Credits

Tuition Fee

HK$1,122,000 per programme (HK$22,000 per credit) for local and non-local students

Tuition fees will not be charged for the 1-credit course "Academic Integrity and Ethics in Business". Students taking the elective subject "Overseas Executive Programmes" will pay the course fee directly to the institution offering the course and will cover the costs of travel, accommodation, visa, insurance, etc. The DBAI programme will not charge a credit fee for "Overseas Executive Programmes".
