If you require one of the following identity documents to reside or study in Hong Kong, you will be regarded as a non-local applicant:
i) a student visa to study in Hong Kong;
ii) a dependant visa / entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration when you were 18 years old or above;
iii) a visa / entry permit under Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG).
Non-local applicants holding only visitor or tourist visas are ineligible for registration as students and commence their studies until a student visa is obtained.
Local and non-local applicants are considered under different admissions schemes. Tuition fees for local and non-local students typically differ across most programmes. If your status changes from non-local to local or vice versa, after application submission, any offers made under the initial admissions scheme may be revoked. Your application will be considered in competition with other eligible applicants under the subsequent admissions scheme.
Applicants who are holders of valid Hong Kong permanent identity cards should apply for admission to our undergraduate programmes via the Non-JUPAS Admission Scheme.
Our undergraduate programmes only offer a single annual intake, which occurs in September.
Late applications submitted after the Main Round will be accepted until 15 May 2025, subject to the availability of study places.
English is the medium of instruction for classes, written assignments and examinations, except for Chinese-related subjects and specially approved schemes/programmes.
The University does not recognise online courses as equivalent to those face-to-face classes provided by regular high schools.
You can access the Academic Calendar here. Successful applicants will receive their class timetables upon completion of the registration process.
The academic year consists of two teaching semesters, each lasting 13 weeks, and a 7-week summer term. The academic year commences in late August or early September, with the second semester ending in April and the summer term running from May to July.
The Non-local Student Services Team offers student-centred support services to non-local students throughout their studies at PolyU. These services include a wide variety of programmes and activities such as the Orientation Programme, Host Family Scheme, Exploring Hong Kong Series and Global Peer Support Scheme. Additionally, students can find essential information regarding pre-arrival preparations and immigration regulations concerning their stay in Hong Kong.
"Non-local students" are generally required to apply for a visa to study in Hong Kong. Exceptions to this requirement include individuals holding a dependant visa/entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration and those staying in Hong Kong under the "Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates".
Please note that the Immigration Department may not accept student visa applications from nationals of Afghanistan, Cuba, Laos, Korea (Democratic People's Republic of) and Nepal. For details, please refer to the Immigration Department's website by clicking here.
If you mistakenly select the wrong visa type, please email us promptly at ar.intl@polyu.edu.hk and attach a copy of your visa/entry permit for verification.

The majority of our mainland students are admitted based on their results in the current year’s Chinese Mainland Joint Entrance Examinations. Therefore, Mainland high school students who are pursuing the Chinese curriculum without participating in the Mainland Gao Kao in 2025 will generally not be considered for admission to our undergraduate programmes.
If you possess other international qualifications, you will only be further considered if you have attained, or demonstrate the potential to attain, strong academic results.
If your qualifications are not included in the “General Entrance Requirements”, your application will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Generally, applicants who have completed high school with excellent academic performance and strong English skills will be eligible for further consideration.
PolyU values high-calibre students and review each application with a holistic approach. Students with non-academic achievements may apply to our programmes through the Special Talents Admission and Recognition Scheme (STARS). Please visit the STARS webpage for details.
PolyU accepts various payment methods. You may refer to our Finance Office website here for available payment methods.

Non-local students are not eligible to apply for financial assistance from either the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region or PolyU. Therefore, it is essential to secure sufficient funds before commencing your studies at PolyU. However, non-local students are eligible to engage in part-time on-campus employment for a maximum of 20 hours per week throughout the year. Additionally, they may engage in off-campus summer employment without any limitations on work hours during the summer months (i.e. 1 June to 31 August). These opportunities can help you earn supplementary income to cover part of your daily expenses.
Eligible students are automatically considered for academic entry scholarships upon applying to PolyU’s undergraduate programme(s). Successful applicants will be notified of scholarship awards at the time of admission. For detailed scholarship information, please visit here.
Full-time non-local students enrolled in government-funded programmes are eligible to apply for accommodation in the Student Halls of Residence. Typically, non-local undergraduate students are offered the opportunity to reside in University-managed Accommodation (including the Student Halls and off-campus housing) during their first year of study, subject to availability. This includes periods of joining Work-integrated Education, internships, and/or outbound exchange programmes, if applicable. From the second year of study onwards, non-local students will be required to arrange their own accommodation outside the Student Halls. Therefore, students should secure sufficient funds for their housing plans. Please click here for detailed hall admission policies.
Applications for credit transfer are typically not accepted until your initial enrolment in the programme or before the end of the add/drop period of the first semester of your first year at our university. At that time, you should submit the credit transfer request to the relevant academic department with relevant documents, such as transcripts of study and syllabi.
For programmes that recognise certain advanced qualifications, such as Higher Diploma, Associate Degree, or Bachelor's Degree, you may automatically be considered for credit transfer. If you are required to complete fewer credits than the normal requirement, it will be indicated in your Notice of Offer.
Normally, no more than 25 percent of the credits required for your PolyU award can be transferred from other post-secondary institutions.
The validity period of subject credits earned is eight years from the year of attainment, i.e., the year in which the subject is completed, unless otherwise specified by the department responsible for the content of the subject. Grades for the transferred credits may or may not be given.
