Prof. TO Chi-ho

Visiting Chair Professor of Experimental Optometry, School of Optometry, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Scientific Director, Centre for Eye and Vision Research Limited; Founder and Director, Vision Science and Technology Company Limited

Professional Diploma in Optometry (1987)

Prof. To Chi-ho’s remarkable achievements in innovative vision science research and myopia control are internationally recognised. He led a research team to invent a novel method to control the progression of myopia (short-sightedness) known as Defocus Incorporated Soft Contact Lens (DISC lens). Clinical trial has shown that DISC lens effectively slows down myopia progression by about 60% in Hong Kong school children aged 8 to 13. DISC lens won the Gold Medal with Jury’s Commendation as well as the Grand Prize of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in the 39th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2011. Prof. To and his team later developed the Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments Spectacle Lenses (DIMS lens), the eyeglasses version of DISC lens. DIMS lens snatched the Grand Prize and Gold Medal with Jury’s Commendation at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2018, as well as 2020 SILMO d’Or Award (Vision) at the 2020 SILMO Optical Fair in France. The project known as Novel High Efficacy Nano Multi-ring Defocus Incorporated Spectacle Lens for Myopia Control co-developed by Prof. To also won the Prize of the State of Geneva and a Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in 2023.
