Stanford VPDoR Prof. Kathryn Ann Moler, and Nobel Laureate Prof. Reinhard Genzel to deliver PAIR Distinguished Lectures in early 2023
PAIR is excited to announce two PAIR lectures delivered by eminent scientists in early 2023! These include:
- PAIR Distinguished Lecture “Forming Stanford’s 1st New School in 70 years: The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability” (9 January 2023) by Prof. Kathryn Ann Moler, Vice Provost and Dean of Research, Marvin Chodorow Professor and Professor of Applied Physics, of Physics and of Energy Science Engineering, Stanford University
Prof. Moler is a renowned materials physicist and has held numerous leadership positions at Stanford. As dean of research, she oversees five shared research facilities and Stanford’s 18 independent labs, institutes, and centers, which span the life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, humanities, engineering, and medicine; and oversee offices that support the research enterprise. In 2020, she served as the transition dean for the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability—the university’s first new school in 70 years which aims to catalyse interdisciplinary efforts to tackle urgent climate and sustainability challenges.
- PAIR Nobel Laureate Public Lecture (9 February 2023) by Prof. Reinhard Genzel, 2020 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Professor Emeritus and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics
Prof. Genzel received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for his observations of the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. His work spans both galactic and extragalactic astrophysics. He and his group made pioneering observations to map the motions of stars close to the Galactic centre, leading to firm evidence for the existence of a supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way and to an accurate estimate of its mass.
