Bachelor of Science (Honours) Scheme in Biotechnology, Food Safety and Chemical Technology (Before 2023-24 intake)

1.  Programme Selection

This Scheme-based programme leads to one of the following BSc (Hons) awards:

  • BSc. (Hons) in Applied Biology with Biotechnology
  • BSc. (Hons) in Chemical Technology
  • BSc. (Hons) in Food Safety and Technology

Students will be asked to indicate their preferred programme by the end of semester 2 of their year 1 study. Students should confirm their programme choices on week 7 (semester 1) of their Year 2 study.

The selection result will be announced before the commencement of the semester 2 of their Year 2 study.

Tentative Schedule of the Programme Selection
Year 1 Sem 1   -
Sem 2 (week 13)  Indication of programme choice (1st draft)
Year 2  Sem 1 (week 7)  Submission of finalized programme choice
Sem 1 (Week 8 – 13)  Interview
Before the commencement of Sem 2  Announcement of the programme choice result

For enrollment to a Major programme, the Department shall reserve the right to decide the final admission offer to any candidates based on but not limited to the student’s choice, GPA, and/or interview results.

 3.  Suggested pattern of progression for study in Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the programme are given as follows:

Guide to Suggested Study Patterns

  Suggested Study Pattern
HKDSE Level 3 or above in the single Science subject or a component of the Combined Science (sub-score)  With HKDSE Level 2 or above in Extended Modules of Mathematics (M1 or M2)  Without HKDSE Level 2 or above in Extended Modules of Mathematics (M1 or M2)
With Chemistry and Biology
With Chemistry only
With Biology only
Without Chemistry and Biology  G H

Foundation and underpinning subjects will be assigned in Stage 1 with reference to individual HKDSE background.

Footnotes:

1 Students who have not taken or attained level 3 or above in HKDSE in Biology as a full subject or in the Biology component of Combined Science with Biology will need to complete ABCT1101 Introductory Life Science.

2 Students who have not taken or attained level 3 or above in HKDSE in Chemistry as a full subject or in the Chemistry component of Combined Science with Chemistry will need to complete ABCT1700 Introduction to Chemistry.

3 Students who have NOT attained level 2 or above in Extended Module M1 or M2 in HKDSE Mathematics are required to take AMA1100 Basic Mathematics - an introduction to Algebra and Differential Calculus.

4 The timing for taking CAR and Service Learning is flexible and can be adjusted based on the students’ own progress.

5 Students who are taking study pattern G or H should discuss with Scheme Leader / Academic Advisor about their study plans before registration in ABCT2701 Analytical Chemistry I and ABCT2416 Introduction to Food Science.

6 Analytical Chemistry I (ABCT2701) is an elective subject for BSc(Hons) in Applied Biology with Biotechnology and BSc(Hons) in Food Safety and Technology, but not included in the curriculum of BSc(Hons) in Applied Biology with Biotechnology with a Secondary Major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ABB+IE).

7 Introduction to Food Science (ABCT2416) is an elective subject for BSc(Hons) in Applied Biology with Biotechnology and BSc(Hons) in Chemical Technology, but not included in the curriculum of BSc(Hons) in Applied Biology with Biotechnology with a Secondary Major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ABB+IE).

4.  Subject aims, learning outcomes, mode of study, teaching/learning approach, assessment and other details are attached in the subject description forms.

5.  For students following the progression pattern specified for their programme, they have to take the number of credits and subjects, as specified in the Programme Requirement Document, for each semester. Students should NOT drop any subjects assigned by the Department unless prior approval has been sought.

6.  Subject to the maximum study load of 21 credits per semester and the availability of study places, students may opt for additional subjects on top of the prescribed credit requirement for award before they become eligible for graduation. Students can take additional subjects from within or outside their programme curriculum. They can choose freely from any subject (unless they are barred because of pre-requisites), and these free electives need not be only those from a list prescribed by the Department.
