Ir Sheldon YAU Siu-lun

Head of Wireless and Core Network Engineering, Hong Kong Telecom Limited

Master of Science in Electronic Engineering (1996)

Ir Sheldon Yau Siu-lun has been a leader in mobile technology advancements in Hong Kong for over three decades. Since the early 1990s, he has helped pioneer innovative features for mobile networks such as mobile coverage in subways. These innovations have helped expand and improve mobile phone coverage in Hong Kong. As mobile networks evolved from traditional voice to data services in the late 1990s, Ir Yau designed antennas that could work with different radio frequencies. In the 2000s, Ir Yau helped set up one of Hong Kong's first 3G mobile networks, which involved changing the way mobile signals were transmitted. His master's degree from PolyU was valuable during this time. In the 2010s, when 4G networks were introduced, he tackled challenges such as using more radio frequencies and combining signals from different frequencies. He also applied technologies from fixed-line networks to improve mobile networks. Subsequently, Ir Yau led a project to consolidate the PCCW and CSL networks. In 2020, he helped HKT launch Hong Kong's first 5G network. Ir Yau is currently working on advanced 5G technology, AI, and ways to use mobile technology for the emerging low-altitude economy. His goal is to keep HKT at the forefront of innovation. He hopes to continue contributing to the progress of the mobile communication industry in Hong Kong and around the world.
