Prof. Chetwyn CHAN

Prof. Chetwyn Chan is Vice President (Research and Development) at The Education University of Hong Kong. Previously, he held various positions at PolyU, the highest being Associate Vice President (Learning and Teaching). Prof. Chan has received numerous prestigious awards both from China and overseas. These include the Global Leadership in Rehabilitation Science Award from Virginia Commonwealth University, the Alumni Honour Award from the University of Alberta, the First Prize in Science and Technology from the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the Second Class State Scientific and Technology Progress Award from the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. These awards recognise his significant contributions to research and education in the field of rehabilitation. Prof. Chan’s research focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying human learning, and enhancing the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities and older populations. He has authored over 200 research papers and has successfully secured more than HK$40 million in competitive research and development grants.

Before he even began his undergraduate studies in optometry, Dr Chin Man-pan was already deeply engaged in volunteering, serving as President of the Hong Kong Youth Volunteer Association. Even when pursuing his PhD, his passion for helping others never waned. Instead, he used his expertise in optometry and visual science to continue his volunteer work, leading undergraduate students to remote regions of China, such as Guangxi, Gansu, and Xinjiang to provide primary eye care services. Dr Chin currently serves as President of The Hong Kong Society of Professional Optometrists, promoting community-based primary eye care. Beyond his academic and professional commitments, he has also forged strong collaborations with multiple non-governmental organisations and centres for the elderly to expand access to eye care services. He has also started his own optometric community clinic, ensuring that local residents can receive professional eye care close to home. Dr Chin has seamlessly combined his professional knowledge and skills with an unwavering commitment to serving and bettering his community.
