Report of Innovation and Technology Scholarship 2021 awardee Loo Hiu Tung

Despite the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was fortunate to participate in a two-week internship at an Ottobock patient care facility in 2022. This internship allowed me to gain hands- on experience and learn from experts in the field of prosthetics and orthotics. Attending patient assessments, observing the fitting and fabrication processes, and assisting in the provision of devices were some of the highlights.

Before starting the internship, I set various learning objectives, including enhancing my knowledge of prosthetic and orthotic devices, developing practical skills in patient assessment and device fitting, and understanding the challenges in resource-limited settings. The preparation process was memorable, involving careful planning of my journey and rearranging accommodation after encountering unexpected issues. However, the warm hospitality and support I received upon arrival in Manila made me feel welcomed and supported.

The clinic I visited in Manila is renowned for its comprehensive rehabilitation services for individuals with limb loss or disability. This overseas attachment provided me with invaluable insights, enhancing my empathy, communication skills and cultural sensitivity, which are all crucial in patient-centred care. Furthermore, witnessing the dedication and resourcefulness of the clinic's staff inspired me to explore innovative solutions within my own practice. I acquired knowledge of different prosthetic and orthotic devices, fabrication techniques and patient assessment methods, equipping me with practical skills for future endeavours. Manila's clinic demonstrated innovative approaches and technologies that could serve as valuable lessons for Hong Kong. The use of locally sourced materials and collaboration with universities, NGOs and the government ensured accessibility and affordability for patients. These lessons can help Hong Kong create a more inclusive environment for individuals in need.

In conclusion, the overseas attachment in Manila provided me with invaluable clinical exposure, cultural immersion and exposure to innovation and technology. This experience enriched my knowledge, skills and perspective on providing prosthetic and orthotic services. I am grateful for this opportunity and eager to make a positive impact in my future studies and career.

My mentorship experience with Professor Li Wen Jung, Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong, has been incredibly valuable and inspiring. Throughout the Mentorship Programme, my mentor provided valuable advice on post-graduate studies and career opportunities, extending beyond academia. His practical and kind guidance created a supportive environment for me to seek advice. I learnt a great deal from his expertise, gaining a clearer understanding of engineering development and the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge. He advised me on pursuing a master's degree or a doctorate and emphasised aligning academic pursuits with personal interests and career goals. Professor Li went above and beyond by connecting me with an experienced product designer, which helped me understand the intersection between engineering and healthcare. His own story and journey in mechanical engineering inspired resilience and determination in me. The Mentorship Programme fostered a supportive relationship, building my confidence and self-belief as I navigate my academic and professional journey. Overall, the mentorship has shaped my aspirations and refined my understanding of the possibilities within mechanical engineering.
