HKICM and HKIPM Joint CPD Seminar on"Steel Frame Constuction in Hong Kong: Threats and Opportunities" The CPD seminar was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM) and the Hong Kong Institute of Project Management (HKIPM), co-organized by the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), and supported by the Australian Institute of Building (Hong Kong Chapter) (AIB), The Hong Kong Institution of Engineering Surveyors (HKIES) and the Hong Kong Institute of Planning Engineers (HKIPE). The guest speaker (Ir Professor Albert Chan) was jointly invited by the two organizers to deliver a technical seminar entitled " Steel Frame Construction in Hong Kong: Threats and Opportunities " at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm on Thursday, 31 May 2018 at lecture room HJ-305, PolyU campus. Ir Professor Albert Chan is currently a Chair Professor of Construction Engineering and Management, and the Head of the Department of Building and Real Estate, of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.   The 166 registered participants of the seminar consisted of the members of HKICM, HKIPM, AIB, HKIES and HKIPE, and previous graduates and current students of BRE, together with some other industrial practitioners and friends. However, as a result of the limited seating capacity of the venue, the two joint organizers ultimately admitted only 152 participants under the "first-come first-served" principle, and priority of admission given to the members of the above-said professional institutions, and graduates/students of BRE of PolyU.   Steel structures have considerable merits over reinforced concrete (RC) structures in terms of constructability, sustainability and precision elegance. The guest speaker shared with the audience the current work practice of structural steelwork in Hong Kong, followed by four construction case applications, including a Chinese opera centre, a public swimming pool, a 24-story hotel, and a private commercial building for illustrating the major drivers and obstacles to adoption of structural steelwork. Resu lts of opinion surveys lined up with experienced industrial experts were presented to as certain the predominant driving factors and barriers that affect the future development of the steel construction industry in Hong Kong. On this basis, the marketing strategies and opportunities for promoting an active development of steel construction were formulated.   The seminar was very informative, clearly presented and thought-provoking. It was well received by 131 show-up attendees with attendance rate of 86%.
