HKIPM and HKIE (BUD) Joint CPD Seminar – Building Planning and Control in Hong Kong

HKIPM and HKIE (BUD) Joint CPD Seminar on "Building Planning and Control in Hong Kong" The CPD seminar was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Project Management (HKIPM) and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers - Building Division (HKIE-BUD), together with the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) as the supporting organization. The guest speaker (Ir Professor K.K. Choy) was jointly invited by the two organizers to deliver a technical seminar entitled "Building Planning and Control in Hong Kong " at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm on Tuesday, 24 October 2017 at lecture room HJ-305, PolyU campus.   The 153 registered participants of the seminar consisted of the members of HKIPM and HKIE (BUD), previous graduates and current taught postgraduate students of BRE, together with some other industrial practitioners and friends.   Hong Kong is unique in the field of building development for its predominantly high-rise and high density. The control of planning, design and construction of private buildings and associated works is under the Buildings Ordinance and its subsidiary Regulations. At the same time, the legal system also makes provisions for the rendering safe of dangerous buildings and lands.   The guest speaker (Ir Professor K.K. Choy) was an Assistant Director of the Buildings Department before retirement in 2011 and he has joined Meinhardt (C&S) Ltd as a Director (Structural) since September 2013. Based on over 40 years of working experience in building planning and control in Hong Kong, the guest speaker shared with the audience an introduction of the underlying principles, standard s and outlines of the legal system of building control currently adopted in Hong Kong. He also highlighted the setting and review of various policies and strategies on building control in respect of structural engineering design, construction and demolition of private buildings.   The seminar was very informative, clearly presented and thought-provoking. It was well received by 114 show-up attendees with attendance rate of 75%, together with another 14 walk-in participants. The seminar ended with some interesting questions from the audience and insightful answers from the guest speaker.   Photo Gallery : HKIPM
