About the Speaker
Prof. Abdullah YAVAS holds the Robert E. Wangard Real Estate Chair in the department of Real Estate and Urban Land Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Wisconsin School of Business. He served as the department chair between 2012 and 2018. He also served as the Academic Director of Graaskamp Center for Real Estate between 2021 and 2023.
Prof. Yavas’s research interests include real estate brokerage, mortgage contracts, real estate auctions, economics of information, and experimental economics. He has published extensively in field-leading journals in the Journal of Financial Economics, Real Estate Economics, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Housing Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and Economic Theory, etc. The results of his research have been cited in some of the nationally known publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Time, Money, BusinessWeek, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Boston Sunday Globe. He has consulted for mortgage companies and real estate investment trusts.
Prof. Yavas is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics. He served as the editor of Real Estate Economics between 2014 and 2020 and as the elected president of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association in 2020. He was a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey between 2009 and 2021. He is currently a fellow of the Real Estate Research Institute. He holds a B.A. in business from Bogazici University and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Iowa.
About the Lecture
The purpose of this Lecture is to discuss real estate bubbles, what causes them and how damaging they are to the economy. Prof. Yavas will also discuss potential indicators of bubbles in housing markets and apply them to the housing prices in China. In addition, Prof. Yavas will present a brief overview of the current state of residential and commercial real estate markets in the US.
