Winner CIB Sebestyén Future Leaders Award 2013

Title: Investigating the green building development in China Winner of the 2013 CIB Sebestyén Award

The CIB Student Chapter Committee has declared the proposal by the HKPolyU Student Chapter the winner of the 2013 CIB Sebestyén Future Leaders Award. The proposed project is supported and will be executed in collaboration with CIB Working Commission W116 - Smart and Sustainable Built Environment.

Research Background

To promote the development of green building in China, the national construction ministry issued a standard called “Evaluation Standard for Green Building” (ESGB) in 2006. This evaluation standard includes six major indicators, namely: land saving and outdoor environment, energy saving and energy utilization, water saving and water resource utilization, material saving and material resource utilization, indoor environmental quality, and operation and management.

A green building label (GBL) will be issued to the building that satisfies the basic number of items in ESGB. The annual number of GBL projects increased significantly, from 10 in 2008 to 241 in 2011. Academics in China also paid grant effort to improve the situation of green building.

At present, it is a general consensus amongst government, public and academics that the conception of green building should be promoted further.

Research Objectives

The four research objectives are:

  • to review and understand the development progress of green buildings in China
  • to evaluate the similarities and differences of China’s green building evaluation standards in other countries
  • to investigate the obstacles which may hinder the development of green building in China
  • to explore the success experiences of projects that obtained green building labels.

Research Methodology

To achieve the research objectives, appropriate methodologies will be utilized, including:

  • Content analysis
  • Face-to-face interview
  • Semi-structured questionnaire survey
  • Case studies.
