Mr. Joshua Lai, Assistant Professor of Practice

Mr. Joshua Lai is currently Assistant Professor of Practice of the Speech Therapy Unit in the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences from The University of Hong Kong and qualified as a speech therapist. He later received his Master of Medical Sciences degree from The University of Hong Kong.

 

Mr. Lai has extensive clinical experience in geriatric speech therapy. He practised as a speech therapist at Hospital Authority hospitals and ambulatory service units, serving clients with neurological communication disorders, dysphagia, and voice disorders. He later worked with a non-governmental organization, overseeing a team of speech therapists responsible for providing outreach services to residential care homes for the elderly. Prior to joining PolyU, Mr. Lai had served as clinical educator for other local speech therapy programmes. He currently focuses on clinical speech therapy education, supervising student speech therapists’ clinical practicum.

 

Mr. Lai is a Full Member of The Hong Kong Association of Speech Therapists and a Speech Therapist in Accredited Register. He had previously served as the Chairperson of The Hong Kong Association of Speech Therapists for six terms. He is also a certified provider of Deep Pharyngeal Neuromuscular Stimulation, VitalStim Therapy, Guardian Therapy, Estill Voice Training, Lessac-Madsen Resonant Voice Therapy, Phonation Resistance Training Exercises, Beckman Oral Motor Assessment and Intervention, Oral Placement Therapy, Lee Silverman Voice Treatment.

 

Mr. Lai is fluent in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin.
