PolyU is deservedly recognized in global university league tables

This year, PolyU as a whole as well as many of its disciplines have improved in major ranking exercises.

  • In the “QS World University Rankings 2010” which evaluated universities’ academic reputation via peer review, research quality via citations, graduate employability and internationalization, PolyU has jumped 29 places from 195th in 2009 to 166th in the latest league table (Details>>) (Details>>). PolyU is also ranked among the top 30 institutions in the " QS Asian University Rankings 2010". (Details>>)

    In the Technology and Engineering Subject Ranking, PolyU has jumped from the 91st place to the 70th over the year (Details>>). The University also fared well in the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences Subject Ranking and is rated for two consecutive years as among the world’s top 200 universities.

  • Times Higher Education and Thomson Reuters partnered for the first time to provide the "World University Rankings 2010" league table with PolyU being ranked in the 149th place based on the University’s performance in research (in terms of volume, income, reputation as well as citations), teaching, international mix of staff and students and research income from industry (Details>>).
  • PolyU has been ranked 15th among Asia-Pacific Institutions in Chemistry according to the 5 August 2010 issue of the Times Higher Education magazine. The ranking is by citations per paper during January 2000 – April 2010 (Details>>)
  • According to the “Academic Ranking of World Universities 2010” announced by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, PolyU has been ranked among the top 300 universities in the world based on four criteria: the quality of faculty measured by the number of highly cited researchers and Nobel Laureates and Fields Medalists, research output based on the number of papers in Science and Nature, and Science and Social Sciences citation index, the quality of education measured by the number of alumni who are Nobel Laureates and Fields Medalists and the per capita academic performance. PolyU is also among the top 100 universities in the world in the field of Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences (Details>>), and in the subjects of Computer Science (Details>>) and Mathematics (Details>>).
  • According to the "2010 by Subject Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities" conducted by the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan, PolyU has been ranked 3rd for its research performance in Civil Engineering based on the number of papers, citations and highly cited papers (Details>>).
  • According to the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) "Top 100 World Rankings of Business Schools", the Faculty of Business is ranked the 70th in the world, the 4th in Asia and the 2nd in Hong Kong, based on research contributions to the top 24 business journals in the period 2005-2009 (Details>>).

Other than Faculties mentioned above, our School of Hotel and Tourism Management is ranked No.2 in the world and No.1 among the Asian institutions of its kind based on research and scholarship (Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research 2009). School of design is ranked among the top three design schools in Greater China and top 30 in the world (BusinessWeek, 2009).

PolyU President Prof. Timothy W. Tong said, “While rankings are not among our ultimate goals, our high standing in these league tables, which put different weightings on different performance indicators, is nevertheless a fitting recognition of our concerted efforts in providing quality education and research over the years. This of course owes much to the hard work and commitment of the entire Poly community – our colleagues, our alumni, our students and our friends.”
