PolyU gears up for further advancement in space research

 

PolyU researchers have been making substantial progress in different facets of space research, with the possibility of establishing one or two special research institutes and turning PolyU’s space technology into civilian use.

Prof. Chetwyn Chan of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and his teammates are studying the impact of micro-gravity on the health of astronauts with a view to preventing bone and muscle loss. They are also exploring the use of Transcultaneous Electrical Simulation in the training and selection of astronauts. In addition, they are involved in the testing of an oral-intake herbal medicine with Ginseng, Huang Qi and Dang Gui as main ingredients for keeping Chinese astronauts in good shape.

Prof. Yung Kai-leung of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering is working closely with experts from the China Academy of Space Technology in the development of a “Camera Pointing System” for lunar exploration.

Prof. Chen Yongqi of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics and his team have been contributing to the determination of the Moon’s shape and size and lunar mapping based on the data obtained from the Chinese orbiter Chang’E I.

The Institute of Textiles and Clothing headed by Prof. Tao Xiaoming has designed new work clothes with anti-static fabrics for the ground staff working at the Control Centre of the China National Space Administration. Details>>
