Mr Dominic Cheung Ho-kin

Mr Dominic Cheung Ho-kin is a veteran theatre practitioner. His experience in theatre work includes the roles of producer, director, actor, translator, and even theatre critic. Cheung started his career in drama by playing Henry in the first production of the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre Company, Skin of Our Teeth, in 1977. He was a founding member of Seals Theatre Company, and in 1982 became a professional actor with Chung Ying Theatre Company after graduation from Hong Kong Baptist University. In 1987 Cheung left Chung Ying to further his studies at the University of Hong Kong, while working as the General Manager of High Noon Production Company Limited at the same time. He graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Translation in 1989 and in 2011 he attained a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In recognition of his contribution to the development of art and culture in Hong Kong, he was awarded the Certificate of Commendation by the Home Affairs Bureau in 2014.


Cheung has translated numerous well-known plays for various theatre groups, and in 2009 was awarded the Silver Jubilee Outstanding Translation Award by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies.


His directing career began in 1990. His directorship earned him nine nominations for Best Director Award by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies and he won the category twice: for Best Director (Comedy/Farce) in 1994 and Best Director (Drama/Tragedy) in 2004.


Cheung has held the posts of Artistic Director of Chung Ying Theatre Company since 2019, Vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies since 1994, Honorary Artistic Director of the Women’s Drama Group of the Hong Kong Family Planning Association since 2009, Advisory Group Member of Radio Hong Kong since 2007, and Drama Assessor of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council since 2005. He is also currently on the Board of Directors of Theatre Space Foundation Limited and iStage Theatre Company.


His earlier positions include General Manager of Chung Ying Theatre Company, Founding Artistic Director of Theatre Space, advisor in drama to the Provisional Urban Council, advisor in drama to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, advisor in the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre Company, Board Member of the International Association of Theatre Critics, Management Committee Member of the Management Committee of the Shatin Theatre Company, and Executive Committee Member of the Arts with Disabled Association.
