Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Based Localization of Mixed Near-Field and Far-Field Targets
Dr Weifeng Zhu, Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Abstract: Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is considered as one of the key usage scenarios in sixth-generation (6G) cellular systems, where localization is considered to be one of the most crucial functionalities. In 6G ISAC systems, base stations (BSs) are expected to be the primary anchors to perform localization. However, line-of-sight (LOS) paths between BSs and targets can be blocked by a variety of obstacles, challenging existing BS-centric localization algorithms. In this webinar, we consider the possibility of employing an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to localize the mixed near-field and far-field targets that are in the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) region of the BS. Moreover, a novel three-phase protocol is presented to localize targets by extracting their position-related information from the received signals, and the theoretical analysis is also provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
