AAEIE Turkish Mosiac Lamp Workshop

The Alumni Association of Electronic and Information Engineering (AAEIE) organized a Turkish Mosiac Lamp Workshop for their members on 18 June 2022. The participants were able to create a unique mosaic lamp for themselves in a relaxing environment. They also got a taste of Turkey’s art and culture during this artistic workshop.

PolyU Faculty Seminar Series

The University launched the PolyU Faculty Seminar Series in May to bring together representatives from different faculties for giving an overview of the PolyU study experience and presenting the special features of individual faculties and departments. The session for the Faculty of Engineering was held on 16 May 2022 for more than 160 secondary school students, teachers and parents. Prof. Kenneth Lam, our Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, welcomed the participants by introducing the Faculty and the importance of engineers in supporting the development of different industries. Prof. Man-Wai Mak, Interim Head of the Department, also shared the key components of the three EIE undergraduate programmes, and helped the audience to have a deeper understanding of the needs of the society and the high demand for IT professionals during the seminar.

Visit by Departmental Academic Advisor

The Departmental Academic Advisor (DAA), Prof. Rui Zhang, paid a virtual visit to EIE from 11 to 13 April 2022. Prof. Zhang is a Professor and Provost’s Chair from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National University of Singapore. Prof. Zhang met with our academic staff, student representatives, Programme Leaders, Research Focus Areas’ Leaders, Departmental Research Committee, as well as the Departmental Learning and Teaching Committee to review our programmes and provided constructive advice for the development of the Department. During his visit, Prof. Zhang also delivered a seminar on “Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) Empowered 6G: Fundamentals, Applications and Challenges” to introduce a new promising wireless technology, named Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS), which has been identified by the industry as a potential key technology to achieve the ambitious goals of 6G. In this talk, Prof. Zhang presented the fundamentals of IRS including its hardware architecture and communication model, its main applications in wireless networks, and its cost and performance advantages as compared to the existing wireless technologies. He focused the main design challenges in efficiently integrating IRSs into the future wireless networks such as 6G, including passive reflection optimization, IRS channel acquisition and IRS deployment, and overviewed their state-of-the-art solutions. Prof. Zhang then discussed open problems and pointed out directions worthy of further investigation in future work in the final part of the seminar.

EIE Microcontroller Application Design Contest (2021-22)

To promote students’ interest in microcontroller-based electronic product design and to raise students’ creativity, innovation and presentation skills, the Department organized the EIE Microcontroller Application Design Contest (2021-22) jointly with the RS Components Ltd. between December 2021 and February 2022. 28 students in 13 teams joined Phase I of this Contest. They had the opportunities to attend the workshops on DesignSpark Mechanical 3D and DesignSpark PCB software to enhance their technical knowledge before the submission of their proposals. 9 teams were shortlisted to enter Phase II of the Contest to implement their products in various areas like IoT, system control and sensor network, etc. They presented the ideas and designs of their products to a judging panel on 18 February 2022. AAEIE Webinar on STEM Education

The Alumni Association of Electronic and Information Engineering (AAEIE) invited our BEng in EIE graduate and the co-founder of STEAM Academy, Mr Steven Yau, to deliver a webinar about STEM education on 19 November 2021 for our alumni. Mr Yau introduced the concept of STEM, which is a broad term used to group together four academic disciplines, including science, technology, engineering and mathematics. He discussed about the importance and the development of STEM education. Mr Yau also shared about his experience on how STEM education like programming and intelligence application workshops could enhance students’ creativity, innovation, logical thinking and problem-solving skills.
