Mentorship Programme Kick-off Tea Reception

This comes another great year to start with, our heartfelt thanks for all our mentors.  This year, we get another strong support from our partners IET (HK) and HEC and help recruiting mentors, both new and old, amounting up to 52!  Whereas we got 88 mentees registered this year!  This is really a good sign that reflects our students understand how mentorship programme functions. Same as previous years, we meet our mentors and mentees to kick off the mentorship programme.  A happy and enjoyable sharing in the afternoon of 18 November at Staff Club.  We really hope our mentees could be benefited tremendously with the devoted and sincere guidance and support from their mentors.

Meet with international students

A Warm Welcome to our International and Inbound Exchange Students!   What an impressive year we are off to so far. This year the Department will host a total of 41 international students and exchange students coming from around the world, including China, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Romania, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.   To help them enjoy their studies and connect with the Department, Professor Tam Hwa-yaw, the Head of Department, together with our academic staff, held a short briefing for them on 26 September 2017.  We hope that all our international students will have a fruitful and enjoyable learning experience at PolyU!

Final Year Project Orientation 2017

We are delighted to meet our co-supervisors, supervisors and students again before the commencement of the Final Year Project for 2017/18 academic year.  To bring in more industrial expertise to broaden our students’ exposure in implementing their final year projects, we again secure strong support from industry with 15 final year projects having co-supervision as well projects proposed by the industry direct.    The Department held the Orientation on 15 September 2017 at our newly renovated Undergraduate Teaching Lab.  This gathering provides an excellent platform for our industrial supervisors to meet their students but also to learn more FYP operation.

Departmental Visit by Professor Vladimiro Miranda

Our warmest welcome to Professor Vladimiro Miranda, Departmental Academic Advisor for his annual meeting with all of our academic and teaching staff!   The visit was scheduled from 11 to 15 September 2017.  Apart from meeting most of our staff through different functional meetings, we also scheduled two time slots for Professor Miranda to meet our research postgraduate and undergraduate students.  A sharing session was arranged on the last day of his visit.  In this sharing session, Professor Miranda again expressed inspiring and innovative ideas for our improvement in terms of teaching and research.  We are also glad that we could involve Professor Miranda to meet our co-supervisors from industry on the Final Year Project Tea Reception held on 15 September 2017.  We all enjoy the sharing with both supervisors, co-supervisors and students.   We look forward to meeting Professor Miranda next year!

EE alumni, Dr He Yiqun visited PolyU on 10 August 2017

PolyU alumni, Dr He Yiqun (賀毅群博士, 上海虹口區區委常委、統戰部部長、虹口海外聯誼會會長) visited PolyU on Thursday 10 August 2017. Our Dr Kevin Chan, Prof. TS Chung and Dr CW Yu joined the meeting with Dr He and followed by the visits at the University Research Facility in 3D Printing and House of Innovation. Dr HE was a PhD graduate in the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1996 and the visit was organized by PolyU AADO and CMAO.

PolyU Summer Programme 2017

The one-day Summer Programme 2017 of EE Department was conducted on 19 July at EF402. 22 secondary students in Form 4 and 5 participated in the event and learned more about programming under the instruction of Dr YF Fung and EE student helpers.   The theme for this year’s program is “Interacting with Robots”. Students were given the opportunity to learn various sensors and display devices in order to develop a simple interfacing unit for a robot. The students were then demonstrated their final products so that they can select the best project by voting.    Finally 4 teams that received the highest votes were presented with a Departmental souvenir. Participants also gave highly positive responses to the event.

A two-day Raspberry Pi workshop for Macau Pui Ching Middle School

The Department organized a two-day Raspberry Pi workshop for 20 students from Macau Pui Ching Middle School on 11-12 July. The workshop covers topics from the basic setup of the operating system, control of simple input/output devices and the applications of a camera to implement object tracking.   In addition to attending the workshop, students also visited the Smart Materials Laboratory and the PolyU House of Innovation.

MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node

The creation of MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node was announced in November 2015, and its focus is on cultivating the innovation capabilities of students, increasing opportunities and accelerating the path from idea to impact.  The Showcase Day June 2017 is a two-week programme for MIT Entrepreneurship and Maker Skills Integrator (MEMSI), which comprises learning in a dynamic classroom environment and factory visitors in Dongguan, Huizhou and Shenzhen. Totally 26 highly promising students from MIT and from universities in Hong Kong have selected, of which PolyU EE has 1 undergraduate and 1 research postgraduate students joined this programme.  This is a golden chance that our students could experience team building, problem solving, building something new with students from other disciplines, as well as assistance from MIT alumni mentors.

Research seminar on “Ultrafast Light Manipulation in a Single Nanowire”

Speaker: Prof. Limin Tong, State Key Laboratory of Modern Optical Instrumentation, College of Optical Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, China. Date: 26 June 2017 (Monday) Time: 4:00 pm Venue: CD634, PolyU Abstract: Integration of miniaturized elements has been a major driving force behind modern ultrafast photonics. One-dimensional optical nanowires or nanofibers have emerged as potential building blocks for miniature photonic circuits and devices for light manipulation. We demonstrate here ultrafast light propagation, modulation and correlation on the single-nanowire scale. Based on nonlinear responses of light waveguided in these 1-dimensional structures, we show ultrafast optical modulation in graphene-activated nanofibers/nanowires and chip-integrated CdS nanowires. Also, by imaging the transverse second harmonic generation (TSHG) from CdS and CdTe nanowires, and converting the TSHG spatial image into the temporal profile of the pulses, we demonstrate ultrafast optical correlation with pulse energy down to femto-joules. About the speaker: Prof. Limin Tong received his PhD from Zhejiang University, China in 1997, and is currently a professor and Dean of the College of Optical Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research interests are in nanophotonics and fiber optics, with an emphasis on nanofiber/nanowire photonics and devices. He received the Chang Jiang Scholars (Ministry of Education, China) in 2012, the WANG Daheng Optics Prize (Chinese Optics Society) in 2007, and the National Science Foundation for Outstanding Young Scholars (China) in 2004, respectively. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America, and an Associate Editor of Optica.

IEEE Distinguished Lecture on "Evolution of EMS Control Centers – PMU Synchrophasor Solutions"

Jay Giri is Director of Power Systems Technology and Strategic Initiatives at GE Grid Software Solutions in Redmond, Washington, USA. Date: 30 June 2017 (Friday) Time: 18:30 – 20:00 Venue: Room FJ 302, Main Campus, PolyU  Abstract Energy Management Systems (EMS) have been deployed for decades at utility control centers to manage the electricity grid in real-time. Today these EMS capabilities are poised to be enhanced quite dramatically with growth of synchrophasor PMU measurements. Solutions to decentralize management of the grid are also being introduced – these include Distribution Management Systems, Substation Automation and advances in grid control devices. These new solutions will help us manage the uncertainties and challenges of the future smart grid. This presentation will describe:   • The history and evolution of the EMS from its digital genesis in the 1970’s. • The primary functions of a modern EMS • Emerging new industry drivers & emerging new technology trends • Impact of growth of microgrids, renewables and distributed generation on the EMS • Growth of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) and synchrophasor measurements worldwide • Wide area monitoring (WAMS) and wide area control (WAMPAC) solutions • Modern advanced fast-acting grid control devices • Concluding thoughts on the challenges and opportunities to manage the future grid Speaker Dr. Jay Giri. He is a co-founder of Energy System Computer Applications (ESCA). Jay Giri designed and implemented the original software for the ESCA automatic generation control (AGC) and dispatcher training simulator (DTS). He was a member of the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Governing Board –Member at Large for Industry Outreach – 2011-2016. He is IEEE PES Distinguished Lecturer.
