1_Mentorship Programme 2023

Mentorship Programme 2023-24 (for current students)

The mentorship programme 2023-24 was held by the Department at EF003, on 2 December 2023 with the support of over 70 participants, including students, teachers, and alumni. The aim of the programme is to provide students an opportunity to learn beyond the classroom; to develop a link with the industry; to enhance their educational, social and personal growth; and to have a good planning on their career development.   During the programme, students were paired with alumni and interacted with them in a delightful atmosphere.

Seminar on "From macro to microscopic: leveraging connected automated vehicles for traffic control" by Dr Huan Yu

As one of the most important cyber-physical systems (CPS) applications, connected automated vehicles (CAV) have been envisioned to greatly enhance efficiency, stability and safety of transportation systems. This talk will focus on CAV-based control problems in mixed traffic that consist of human-driven vehicles (HV). Cruising control strategies of CAVs are developed to not only guarantee smooth and safe driving behaviors of the ego vehicle, but also to stabilize the surrounding HVs. This talk begins with conventional traffic control of which actuation and sensing are conducted from a macroscopic viewpoint. A methodological Partial Differential Equation model-based control design for stop-and-go traffic stabilization will be discussed. Motivated by the proposed fixed-boundary traffic control, I will discuss how CAV-based sensing and control can be designed for a string of vehicles. In particular, a safety-critical traffic control framework will be introduced, employing control barrier functions to impart collision-free safety guarantees for both the CAV and HVs. Data validations using vehicle trajectory will demonstrate the efficacy of our designs. I will also highlight how the data can enhance theoretical control designs in intelligent transportation systems using physics-informed machine learning.   Speaker’s Bio: Dr. Huan Yu is an Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), jointly appointed with the Intelligent Transportation Thrust and the Robotics and Autonomous Systems Thrust, and also an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). She received the B.Sc. degree from Northwestern Polytechnical University, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, United States. She was a visiting scholar at University of California, Berkeley and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Power and energy systems often face limitations in power capacity and efficiency due to the inevitable presence of unwanted reactive power circulation. Employing a dual reactive element to counteract any unwanted reactance has been the only solution choice, for example, using capacitance to counteract leakage inductance. Such solutions involve complicated design processes and costly realizations due to the resonance nature of reactive power compensation. Up to now, there has been no alternative due to the absence of negative-valued counterparts for capacitance and inductance in the real world. Our negative inductance synthesizer can cancel real inductance directly, and change the way compensation has been done in the past century! No more resonance! No more frequency sensitivity! No more need for precision design!   Speaker’s Bio: Chi K. Michael Tse graduated from the University of Melbourne. He is Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. He is/was honorary professor and distinguished fellow with several Australian, Canadian and Chinese universities, including Melbourne University, RMIT University, University of Western Australia and Calgary University. The 29th Congregation cum EEE Outstanding Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony was held at the Jockey Club Auditorium on 21 November 2023. It was a joyous occasion filled with pride and excitement to celebrate the graduation of more than 600 students from our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The EEE Outstanding Alumni Awards were also presented to the recipients, including Dr Kang Kuen Lee, Ir Dr Barry Mok, Mr Mike Ng, and Dr Fengze Tan, in this event. Their significant achievements in the respective fields presented in this ceremony gave the fresh graduates who attended the Congregation great encouragement to pursue success in their future careers.

Seminar on "Blockchain-Enabled Social Media Network for Mitigating Misinformation Spread" by Prof. Lorry Rui Luo

Our approach leverages the information transmission-time distribution and models the transmission of misinformation as double-spend attacks on a blockchain framework. By integrating the misinformation distribution into the classic SIR (Susceptible, Infectious, or Recovered) model, we introduce a modified SIR model that replaces the traditional single rate parameter. This adaptation allows us to analyze the impact of misinformation propagation within a multi-community network. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed blockchain-enabled social media network in curbing the spread of misinformation. Specifically, we showcase how our network outperforms a baseline network by effectively flattening the curve of the infected population. This talk offers insights into combating the pervasive issue of misinformation in social media platforms. By leveraging blockchain technology, we aim to contribute to the development of robust and reliable mechanisms for safeguarding the integrity of information dissemination in online communities.   Speaker’s Bio: Dr. Rui Luo earned his BEng from Tsinghua University, and his PhD degree from Cornell University. His research interests include statistical signal processing and complex networks. Currently, Dr. Rui Luo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering at City University of Hong Kong.

The restoration methods can also be used to recover crucial visual information for digital forensics and make AI-based vision robust to common corruptions. In this talk, we investigate a real-world image and video restoration problem with bit errors on the encoded bitstream due to unreliable communication channels or physical damage of storage medium. The bitstream corruptions cause complicated and unpredictable error patterns in the pixel domain, such as image block misalignment, blocking artifacts, color artifacts, ghosting effect, content loss, and novel combinations of those, which cannot be addressed by existing techniques trivially. We will present our recent studies on bitstream-corrupted image/video restoration and benchmarking.   Speaker’s Bio: Dr. Yi Wang received the BEng in Electronic and Information Engineering and MEng in Signal and Information Processing from Northwestern Polytechnical University, China, and earned PhD in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2021. He is currently a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. He has published more than 20 papers in journals and international conferences, including IEEE Transactions (e.g., IEEE TIP, TCSVT, TNNLS, and TMM), CVPR, and NeurIPS. He worked as a Research Fellow in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, from 2021 to 2023. His research interest includes Image/Video Processing, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Digital Forensics. He is IEEE Member. He served as Associate Editor of The Visual Computer.

Though widely known for its communication capabilities, optical fiber has another important application in the form of optical fiber sensors (OFSs). Traditional point sensors, which measure a single point or a small area, often fail to provide comprehensive data over large areas. To address this limitation, the concept of distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOSs) was introduced. DFOSs facilitate continuous, real-time monitoring of physical parameters along the entire length of the fiber, achieving a constant flow of data over expansive areas. This unique attribute makes DFOSs ideal for the surveillance of large structures such as pipelines, bridges, and dams, where abnormal or damages may span a significant distance. This talk will present the basic principles of DFOSs and explore some of their applications in industry.   Speaker’s Bio: Dr. Huan Wu received a B. Eng. Degree from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2013, followed by a Ph.D. degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2018. Serving as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE) at HK PolyU from 2018 to 2020 and later in the Department of Land Surveying and Geoinformatics (LSGI) at HK PolyU from 2020 to 2022, she currently is Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE). Her research interests include distributed fiber optic sensors and their applications. Dr. Wu has published over 20 papers on IEEE Communications Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (TIE), IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology (JLT), Optics Express (OE) etc. She also serves as a technical consultant for Water Supplies Department (WSD), The Hong Kong SAR Government.
