Curriculum

In Year One, students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum within the Faculty of Engineering.

In Year Two, students will complete a common curriculum within the Scheme. It focuses on the fundamentals of engineering science, engineering mathematics, engineering economics, computing and introductory studies of both electrical engineering and transportation systems engineering.

In Year Three, students follow a semi-structured study pattern by taking compulsory core subjects in electrical engineering and elective subjects. The focus is on consolidating the fundamentals and developing teamwork and experimental skills. Discipline-specific language subjects are also studied.

In Year Four, students take advanced core subjects and elective subjects and carry out final year projects. Final year projects provide a comprehensive experience of learning engineering technology, problem-solving techniques, communication skills (both written and verbal) and creative thinking. Depending on their career aspirations and specialisations, students can choose from a list of electives to complement their knowledge in various areas of electrical engineering.

Engineering practice is an integrated component of the curriculum. Student learning is supplemented by a variety of laboratory, training and project activities. Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or industrial attachment.

Students can also participate in exchange programme and spend a semester at an overseas university. Every year, a number of students participate in exchange programmes with institutions such as Cardiff University, National University of Singapore, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, University of Wisconsin-Madison and North Carolina State University. The exchange programme offers excellent opportunities for students to study abroad, broaden their horizons and develop an appreciation of the cultures of other countries.

Engineering and Entrepreneurship Club (E&E Club) provides a platform to enhance students’ interests in engineering and understanding of entrepreneurship. E&E Club organises workshops to train students’ technical skills and invites experts to share about the requirements of entrepreneurship with students. It further supports students participating in both local and overseas underwater robot competitions.

Seminars, industry visits and overseas study tours are also organised to broaden students’ horizons.
