About the Speaker
Sr Dr CHEUNG Tin Cheung, SBS, is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, Adjunct Professor of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, City University of Hong Kong as well as Adjunct Professor of the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong. After he acquired a Higher Diploma in Surveying at PolyU, he went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the U.K., and his PhD degree in Hong Kong. During his tenure as Director of Buildings, Dr Cheung led the Buildings Department in providing services on both existing and new private buildings through enforcement of the Buildings Ordinance, with the aim of promoting building safety; setting and enforcing safety, health and environmental standards for private buildings; and improving the quality of building development. Dr Cheung was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star in 2019 for his dedicated and meritorious service to the Government, particularly in promoting building safety and a sustainable built environment in Hong Kong.
About the Lecture
In the face of rapid urbanisation and economic growth, Hong Kong is confronted with various sustainability challenges, from climate change to increasingly dense spaces, to overconsumption and waste generation, among others. The building industry plays a vital role towards mitigating these challenges, and it is important that we take proactive approaches to integrate sustainable practices in the planning and design of new developments and the renewal and retrofit of our existing built environment.
The Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) is deeply committed to fostering green building movement in the built environment. In addition to spearheading initiatives such as the Retrofitting Guidebook, the Climate Change Framework for Built Environment and Zero-Carbon-Ready Building Certification Scheme, as well as the Guidebook for Sustainable Built Environment, HKGBC serves as the certification body of BEAM Plus, Hong Kong’s leading green building rating system. BEAM Plus provides a framework for evaluating and promoting sustainable construction projects, recognising the importance of innovative technologies and design strategies to reduce the environmental impact of construction.
The session will highlight the initiatives led and developed by HKGBC in guiding green building practices and emphasise the commitment to carbon neutrality. By embracing these initiatives and striving for carbon neutrality, the building industry can significantly contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future.
