BRE Research Students Winning CIOB(HK) Outstanding Paper Awards 2018

The  research  papers  submitted  by  our  four  PhD  research  students  to  the  CIOB(HK)Outstanding Paper Awards 2018 in late July 2018 were adjudicated as the Gold Award and another 3 Commendation Awards (Category: Research Postgraduate Students) out of 6submissions from the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) of PolyU. Heart felt congratulations to those students and their respective PhD supervisors for winning the seprestigious awards. Each winner received an Award Certificate and a Prize Cheque from the Guest  of  Honour,  Mr  Michael  Wong  Wai-lun  (黃偉綸),  JP,  Secretary  for  Development(發展局局長) of the Hong Kong SAR Government, during the CIOB(HK) 45th Anniversary Dinner 2018 held on Friday, 21 September 2018 at the New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel, Tsim Sha Tsim, Kowloon, Hong Kong.   The primary aims of the CIOB(HK) Outstanding Paper Awards 2018 are to promote the excellence in construction management, and to inspire students to explore and share smart construction  approaches  with  focus  on  the  theme  “Smart  Construction
Collaborate Excellence” to advance development in the construction industry. Winner of HKIPM Project Management Achievement Awards 2017 (Category: Research) - Dr Daniel Chan

In the Project Management Achievement Awards (2017)organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Project Management (HKIPM), the application submitted by the research team led by Cr Dr Daniel W.M. Chan (陳煒明博士營造師), Associate Head (Teaching and Learning) and Associate Professor of BRE, was adjudicated as the Winner Award of the HKIPM Project  Management Achievement Awards  2017  (Category:  Research)  with  their  empirical  study  of  Investigating  the  Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) and Target Cost Contracting (TCC) Procurement Strategies in Hong Kong.He received an award certificate from a member of the Judging Panel at the HKIPM Annual Dinner2018 held on Thursday, 19 April 2018 at the Royal Plaza Hotel, Mongkok, Kowloon.   Project Title: An Investigation of Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) and Target Cost Contracting(TCC) Procurement Strategies in Hong Kong Construction Industry Research Team Leader: Cr Dr Daniel W.M. Chan Research Team Members: Ir Prof Albert P.C. Chan and Sr Prof Patrick T.I. Lam   The HKIPM Project Management Achievement Awards (HKIPM Awards) is held each year in Hong Kong, and the awards are aimed to provide an opportunity for organizations and project managers in different disciplines showing their project success amongst their counterparts. The awards were based  on  the  quality  of  application  submission and the  practical  outcomes  of  research  projects conducted by academics in Hong Kong, the contents of which should be focused on the pertinent aspects  of  project  management.  The  winners  under  each  category  of  HKIPM  Awards  will  be endorsed by HKIPM to submit to the international judging panel of the Asia Pacific Federation of Project Management Achievement Awards (apfpm Awards).   Apart from the HKIPM Award obtained, the same research project was also adjudicated as the Winner Award of the apfpm Project Management Achievement Awards 2017 (Category: Research)organized by the Asia Pacific Federation of Project Management. Prof. Heng Li Awarded a ECF Grant

Let’s have a round of applause  for Prof. Heng Li, Chair Professor of Construction  Informatics  and  Professor  of  BRE,  who  has recently won agrant from the Environment and Conservation Fund (ECF環境及自然保育基金) of theGovernment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region!   In the industry, most of construction wastes are suitable for land reclamation and site formation  as  well  as  can  be  recycled  in  construction,however, the current practices of construction waste sorting and recycling highly depend on manual   methods. Prof.Li’s winning proposal on‘Construction Waste Sorting and Recycling  Robot  (建築垃圾分類回收機器人)’aims to develop a smart robot equipped with the specially-designed and automated system so as to take care of sorting and  recycling  as well as improve the current costly and inefficient practices.   Established under the Environment and Conservation Fund Ordinance in 1994, the ECF provides financial support for research projects, conferences,educational and other activities which contribute to the environment and conservation of Hong Kong.   More about Prof. Heng Li :Prof Heng LI  

Winner of apfpm Project Management Achievement Awards 2017 (Category: Research)- Dr Daniel Chan

In the Project Management Achievement Awards (2016)organized by the Hong Kong Institute of Project Management (HKIPM), one academic staff of the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) of PolyU was rewarded for his research project announced on 13 February 2017.Under the Research category, Dr Daniel W.M. Chan (陳煒明博士), Associate Head (Teaching and Learning) and Associate Professor of BRE, was one of the two winning teams from local universities  with  his  empirical  study  of  exploring the  application  of  Pay  for  Safety  Scheme(PFSS) in the construction industry of Hong Kong. BRE PhD Student, Maxwell receiving Award at West Africa Built Environment Research Conference

Let’s give a big clap to Mr. Antwi-Afari Maxwell Fordjour, our PhD student who received the Gibrine Adam Promising Young Scholar Award at the West Africa Built Environment Research (WABER) Conference2017. Started in 2009, the West Africa Built Environment Research (WABER) Conference offers researchers the opportunity for exchange of knowledge and interaction on current research and issues in the built environment area.In summer 2017, the 7thWABER Conference was held at the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana, featuring an array of interactive workshops and sessions on research related topics and issues of interest. The Gibrine Adam Promising Young Scholar Award recognized Maxwell, a young researcher who demonstrated promise and potential to become a research leader.It was a great reward for Maxwell’s impressive presentation on the paper‘Effects of Quadriceps Muscle Fatigue on Balance Control and Fall Injuries following Repetitive Squat Lifting Task in Construction Workers’ at the Conference.

BRE PhD Student, Waleed Receiving Award at International Postgraduate Research Conference

 Please join us in congratulating Mr. Waleed Umer, our PhD student on winning ‘The Dean’s Award for Best Presentation’ at the 13th International Postgraduate Research Conference on 15 September 2017. Waleed was highly praised for his presentation skill and research on ‘Biomechanical Testing of Ergonomic Interventions for Rebar Tying’.   Organized by the School of the Built Environment at the University of Salford, the International Postgraduate Research Conference aims at providing researchers with an ideal platform of gaining diverse perspectives on cutting-edge international research in the built environment.  

‘Anti-heat Stress Clothing’ wins Grand Award in PolyU Distinguished Knowledge Transfer Awards

A huge congratulations to Prof. Albert Chan and his research team on recently winning the Grand Award in the Community Excellence Category of the PolyU Distinguished Knowledge Transfer Awards(卓越知識轉移項目獎：社會項目大獎)!Recognizing the team’s excellence and great contribution to the community,  this prestigious award  is  a  deserved  tribute  to  their painstaking research‘ Anti-heat Stress Clothing for Construction Workers in Hot & Humid Weather’ over years.   The goal of the PolyU Distinguished Knowledge Transfer Awards is to encourage colleagues to advance knowledge and provide high impact knowledge services for accelerating the innovation and technological development of the region and  beyond.With the theme of ‘Stars Connected’,the Prize Presentation Ceremony of the PolyU Distinguished Knowledge Transfer Awards  was held on  5  June  2017.To  kick-start  this  important occasion, the officiating guests included Mr. Nicholas Yang, JP, the Secretary for Innovation  and  Technology  Bureau of the HKSAR Government,Mr. Chan Tze Ching,BBS, JP, the Chairman of Council of PolyU and Dr Miranda Lou, the Vice President (Administration and Business)of PolyU and the Chairman of Board Directors of PolyU Technology and Consultancy Company Limited.   In the Ceremony,Prof. Albert Chan together with his team members were very honoured to receive the Grand Award (the  Community  Excellence  Category) from Mr. Chan Tze Ching, BBS, JP on the stage.In addition to the Community Excellence  Category(社會項目), there were three Grand Awards to praise colleagues’ exceptional contribution in the respective categories  of Business Excellence(商業項目), Research Excellence(科研項目)and Technological Excellence(科技項目). The  Ceremony  was filled with a  lot of joy, heart felt congratulations and encouragement to the awardees.   In Hong Kong, it is common that construction workers work outdoors for long hours under hot and humid weather conditions.   Workers’ health and safety is a matter of great concern for the industry. To alleviate their  discomfort  and risk of heat stroke, under Prof. Chan’s leadership, a dedicated team of research members had the thorough studies over years and successfully came up with a couple of practical measures,one of which is a great example ‘Anti-heat Stress Clothing’. Since PolyU granted the Construction Industry Council the license of manufacturing the‘ Anti-heat Stress Clothing’ at a nominal cost of HK$1in 2015,the wide spread adoption of the clothing has enhanced a strong culture of workers’ well-being, health and safety as well as an ideal achievement of higher productivity. It is likely that over 300 thousand of workers will benefit from it in future.   Prof. Chan said, “The  success  of  our  knowledge  transfer for  the  benefit  of  the construction workers is very encouraging to the whole team.”   More about Prof. Albert Chan : Ir Prof Albert PC CHAN
