Commercial optical interface-rates are approaching 1-Terabit/s but which technology will reach this goal is not clear. We review the use of high-speed electronics to achieve symbol-rates up to 107-Gbaud and their application to coherent optical systems. Specifically, we show experimental research results from recent experiments using single and dual-carrier 16QAM and 64QAM systems and to achieve 1-Terabit/s.
